My 87 350 TPI IROC-Z....
Has a HyperTech Chip (Stage 2) with the 160* thermostat and I wanna get that nonsense out of there and put a stock chip back in with a 180* stat. But, my question is do I get the 87 chip or the 89? Are there differences in the programming considering performance? The 89 would also let me disable the 9th start injector. (not quite sure how to go about it though)
Depending on the feedback from this post, https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=259813 I may have your solution.
Incidentally, the stock programming was set up for a 195°F thermostat, but that's pretty easy to "fix" to operate with a 180°. The other consideration is the cold start. If you disable it in the programming and compensate with extra service injector shots, the only thing you really need to do is disconnect the CSC or the CS injector connector itself.

the word around here in the diy-prom is that the $6E code (89) is much more refined than the $32b code (86-88). i myself run the 6e in my 88 iroc. i did of course get rid of the csi system. you MUST disable VATS on the 89 chip for it to work. if you have no access to prom equipment get the 87 chip and do not worry about it.
many of the stock settings on either code really do suck. i've modified the heck out of my $6E AUJL to get the driveability, perfomance, and gas mileage i want.

you guys seem to know what you're talking about so I'm going to try to avoid posting a new topic. I have an 89 TPI350 and am looking into buying some PROM equipment, particularly an '87 ECM with a ZIF socket installed that I know of. I'd rather use this than modifying my ECM. From what I can tell, the mask from the '87 is $32B and the '89 is $6E. First, is it possible to get the $6E mask onto a chip to install in the '87 ECM? And second, does this really matter or is it just more convenient to start tuning with the correct mask for my vehicle? Thanks for your help all.

Just kidding....(you hope). You might get lucky though since the post is a month old. I don't think you can get the $6E mask onto a chip to put in the 87 ECM. I could be wrong. I am still learning to DIY. Last edited by CaptPicardsZ28; Oct 19, 2004 at 03:08 AM.

seriously you can get put $6E code on a $32B ecm. all you have to do is remove the CSI (cold start injector) and disable vats. remember 86'-89' did use the exact same 165 ECM. the only thing that changed between the years was the code that was on them.
86' $32
87-88' $32B
89' $6E

Wouldn't CSI already be removed from the $6E mask? '89 didn't have a cold start injector, correct? And lets say hypothetically I removed the '89 chip (that I use now) and used it to get the $6E mask: would the BIN that I download from it have my exact VATS information for my ignition key or is it more like an ON/OFF switch as far as the BIN is concerned? I appreciate the help, sorry if I offended anyone or broke the rules.
