police package
ok this is another question for a friend of mine. I keep telling him to become a member but I guess he keeps putting it off. Anyway with that out. He's got a 91 z28 with the L98. It was an old police car. What is the difference between that and the regular Z28 if any. Also if there is a differnce what is the power rating difference? thanks

I thought the only difference was the b4c was just like the 1le cars with a/c, power was the same but I could be wrong
If it was a old Police car there is no difference except for RPO B4C which added some heavy duty parts such as a 140 amp Alternator, oil & tanny cooler. Power out put for the 350 TPI is the same. But again its a old Police car and they did have high miles and serve use. Not my choice for 3rd Gen car.

I thought that the b4c package was only applied to the RS package. Basically a Z-28 in RS clothing. If it's a Z-28 then it is nothing special, just a Z that was used by the po po.

The B4C was a package added to the RS. The exterior looked like a stock RS with the solid grille, plain hood and 16" rims.
I bought one back in 98 with 95k that was used as a Mass State Undercover car. I have had three with the 350TPI motor and that one ran the best out of them all.
If you have a chance to grab one I would be all over it! Just keep in mind when you go to insure the car you will be paying for a Z28 because that is what the VIN comes back as. So when I sold mine I changed the tags and sold it as a Z28!

They also have this cool plain rubber floor mat in them. It looks cool and is easy to clean since it's non absorbant. I'd like to put that in mine. Prob lighter weight too.

Funny the difference in the forums. I've owned 2 police cars, one an L05 and an LT1. Yes, they see use and get some miles put on them. I think this is countered then by the routine maintenance they receive. They have strict maintenance schedules that include rebuilds/replacements every xxx miles. Both of my cars had over 150k miles and ran GREAT. Not all police cars are "ragged out" and should be passed over.

Then don't buy them from an auction, lots of private sellers within departments put them up for sale and are glad to let you test drive them. I would only buy a car at auction if it was incredibly cheap.

There is a similar dealer you might be refering to in the cleveland area (http://www.emergencyremarketing.com/current.htm). I like the third one down 175,000 miles, $4000! YESSSSS! 120,000 miles, only $5500 - what a steal! And that place is even cheaper than most ex-cop'er rides you will find on autotrader.com
I'm done with this thread, everyone has the right to make bad decisions for themselves as long as it doesn't affect me.

If you even consider debating that with someone - there's no 16 year old kid that will do what has been done to patrol vehicle's on a routine basis, and if you somehow doubt that, go to your local police department and ask abouthow to get into their ride along program. That unit will automatically be eliminated from any high risk calls where vehicle abuse is at it's worst - but none the less, just on a couple traffic stops, you'll get a taste of what it is to try to get through traffic (WOT, BRAKE!, WOT, BRAKE!, WOT, BRAKE!), and have some ******* brake check the living **** out of you because he's "Startled" by the lights. Would you take your car over a 4-6 inch curb at 5-40 MPH time after time? Welcome to a stop light traffic stop program, where it would get done with 4-8 hours straight, day in and day out until the detail was over. I'd love to do that alignment! And that's 3 shifts a day, 365 days a year, for 2-6 years. Unless you are all-knowing, you have no idea which cars had it even worse, but I can promise you, even the detective cars go through more abuse in one buy-bust than you might put on your car after a whole week of autocrossing, assuming the suspect doesn't flee, in which case if the car makes it back in one peice - the officer did a good job. Who do I make the check out too again?

We beat the CRAP out of our patrol cars. Half of them have transmission problems, brake problems, misses, etc. On the outside, they look mint. Fresh paint, perfect lettering, etc. But as far as maintenence goes. HAR. I laugh at people that want to buy ex-patrol cars. It's just plain crazy.

Well, I'm sorry some of you guys had bad experiences, but my latest B4C car is running great, still strong, no smoke. The last B4C I had was also in great shape. Both around 100K miles and many years in service. I got my most recent one at the auction and I didnt get to test drive it prior to bidding. It was a patrol car, high speed pursuit camaro. Car was properly serviced its entire life (all drivetrain parts and brakes), and in fact has run on 92 octane gas its entire life. Thats alot better than some of the cars I've bought from private owners. You'd be supprised how many people dont properly maintain their cars. They usually forget about the tranny and rearend. If you win one of these B4C's at the auctions you can request the service record. They dont have to give you one but if you're nice you might get one. My only gripes with the B4C's is the police wiring.

I think the B4C camaros, probes, intrepids, and everything else departments use are prolly beat on a LOT less than the crown vics. With the exception of cars detectives use. If it was a state police car, it prolly wasnt beat on much at all. (since it was prolly used for traffic enforcement, and not to respond to calls)
Another thing. A local dept around here has a few camaros. they are NOT B4C.. They were owned by drug dealers, and were taken over by the PD after a bust. That happens a lot too. The city I used to work for, has a few pickups, two honda civics, etc.
