88' Tpi Engine Layout, Need Help!
need a little help from all you TPI experts out there... :hail: i have a 85' IROC that i bought from a guy who put a 88' TPI in it... he kept the 85 ECM (dont know how...) and replaced some other stuff... my ride is getting to get blasted but i have to pull the engine and everything and replace some stuff, problem is, im engine-illiterate and dont know what everything under the hood is or what their called except for the batt and the actual engine.. does anyone have pics or info that has everything labeled or what their cld and used for??? my chiltons and haynes really doesnt give me much and i cant access a GM service manual. i need to know what i need so i can replace everthing inthe bay when i get the new motor in...??? any help would be great!!! :hail: :hail: BTW, i tried to attach a pic of the engine bay with everything still in it but cant figure out clip art to label the parts.... ex.. the 2 big rounds thing on the left, the round thing by the lights, the silver canister, relays, lines, hoses, valves.... etc thanks

WOW! DAMN! your bay looks almost identicle to mine!. i'm gonna either have the engine rebuilt or replace it completely... have to check and see how my funds are after the new year... but b4 i do that i wanna make sure i know whats under the hood and what each part is for and how it operates so i wont ripped off by anyone... need to make sure i know my sh*t before i go talking to any shops.... so what are the two cirlce blk boxes on the passenger side, the blk one on the driver side, the sivler canister on the passenger side with hoses coming out of it, the blk cirlce cylinder up front on the driver side with about 3 wires coming from it... those various hoses around the left part of the engine and those relay on the firewall.... etc thanks for any help.....

Are you asking about the heater and emission hose lines over the passenger valve cover? That's something I have to address to replace my own gaskets on an 89 L98 350.
The black canister on the drivers side near the radiator, that too is emission canister charcoal used to process exhaust gases for low emissions. There is the EGR and AIR valves and pumps up near the top end, the silver capsule shaped apparatus with the inlet and outlet pipes along the passenger firewall/wheelwell, That's part of and typical of all air conditioned GM cars for years. It's not to be serviced by a home mechanic as it's very high pressure.
The Haynes and Chiltons are actually brother and sister manuals which is why they're so much alike. The Service manual from GM covers the car in much better detail specific down to the year and model... it's worth having for a long run of ownership.

Check the cooling section as well on fuses outside the cabin, like the relays and the kind inline that need to be respliced when broken [fuseable links]. I don't have the info first hand ,but the fans are a 'hot' issue in the cooling section. You seem to know the Tuned Port components it sounds like?

The Haynes/Chiltons do point out those components, but I figure this year I'll be opting for the factory manual....in fact, eBay...Here I come! hehe
Good luck, I need it

I got a manual on CD for a DVD repair but printing all the various pages is not something I prefer... I like hardcopy. You will much prefer GM's own manuals Back in the day, HELM charged $30 for these and they can be seen now running as high as $100 or more at times.

Helms Manuals
FYI, bought my son the factory manual for his 88 GTA as a Christmas present. Helms wanted $120 for it, found it at www.factoryautomanuals.com for $60. It got here in 3 or 4 days and looked almost brand new.
Still looking at the fbody cd too, anyone have one? Worth getting in addition to service manual?

That addresses the A/C components/area at least. I'd appreciate one for the heater/emission hoses running over the top of the engine and to be honest, not sure if I have a relay problem but both of my power mirrors stopped working...is this corrosion or an electrical fault as nothing happens with either?

If you need an 88, I know I checked out those auctions to see if there was some reasoning behind the 89 being in demand, but my moneys on the turbo TA year!
Try eBay every now and then, don't bid more then you want... other auctions will list lower
