TPI Memcal and prom problems
TPI Memcal and prom problems
We just got a TPI install on a 77 vette started, thanks to s10wildslide and his amazing harness!
However there are still problems. When we start the car, it runs really rough, and has a hard time running, because it seems to be running extremely rich!
We are using a memcal out of a 6cylinder ecu, with the chip removed and replaced with a Tunerpro created rom burned via a moates Burn1 (offset via Moates.net instructions.
With this chip, I get a code 33, and a code 41, which seem to be directly related
33= Maf Sensor Voltage issue
41=Cy Position/Prom issue Via snap on tool
I can get a completely stock 89 5.7l tpi memcal to work, and run smooth, however it only starts if I replace it immediately after the modded memcal, due to the VATS system.
Is there a difference in the smaller chips on the 6 cylidner memcal that would cause the car to run like crap?? Or does it seem like the problem would be isolated to the chip??
Also is a completely stock Memcal available through a GM dealer??
Any help is appreciated, the car has shown its first signs of life this past weekend, andwe are anxious to get it moving again!

Who owns the 89 5.7 memcal?
I would use that one, either cutting off the stock prom and putting a zif socket in it or using a memcal adaptor.
I am pretty sure the reason the car isn't working right is due to the secondary board on the V6 memcal.
GM may still sell stock memcals but I have no idea how much they would rape you. I ended up buying a couple of memcals from SLP when they had them for $49.95 a few years back.

Did you start with a 6 cylinder prom from a 165 ecm, or another ecm?
If for some reason you tried to start the car with the 6 cyl modded prom, and the car goes into limp home mode, its going to run horrible, if at all. While you have burned your V8 settings onto the eprom located in the memcal, the limp home mode chips are untouched. They still have settings for a V6.
If you didn't save your new checksum after making changes, the car will go into limp home mode immediately after starting.
Not saying this is your problem, just wanted to throw that out in case it sparks an idea or two.

I started with a 6 cylinder calpak from a 165 ecu, removed the prom and socketed/added a new at29c256 prom
Are these generally expensive from the dealer??
I have noticed they are somewhat hard to find used

is for a SD '90-'92 system 350 AUJP auto
Glad you like the harness. I can get you the part number for the memcal you need. I'm not at home right now to get that number for you. If you don't hear from me, please remind me...tonight is a busy night. Gotta install a TPI harness in a 70s Chevy pickup and spend the evening with my family. Someone will probably post the part number soon anyway. You're probably looking for the ARAP memcal.

Use part number 16150500. Its for an 89 350 TPI F body memcal. There are options as far as which BCC are better than others, but since you have a burner, its no biggie because you can just pick what you want to use from the ftp site at dyi-efi. The part number I mentioned is a little cheaper than most others. Its $49.26 shipped.

I will be bypassing the stock rom with the moates adapter, so you are correct, I will pick the rom I wish to use!
Well...got the moates adapter, and installed into the car. Starts right up, and does not throw me the Prom code any longer
However..I do get code 33, map sensor problem
Not sure what to do here, are there different map sensor versions out there?

Time to do some datalogging and see what is going on.
You'll see right away if the MAP is wired wrong or is just not working.
Oh yea, be sure to hook the vacuum line to it

(BTDT) Got the Snap on scanner reading it now, set the timing, however I am having one hell of a time seeing the mark on the crank pulley.
I burned a new rom, and it seems to be rid of the 33 code...well see tomorrow. Also going to borrow another map and see if it runs any better with it. This one has been sitting for some time

Your map sensor is not the problem... you shouldn't have one on the car at all! Your running a 165, so the code 33 is for a MAf problem. It means MAF signal low/ flow high.

make sure the maf burn off relay is working or you will replace a maf sensor for nothing
