Egr Code 32

Hi Guys,

After replacing the intake manifolds I have been getting code 32 on start up when cold. The reves fo up to 1000 then down to maybe 250-300 then to 700 and by that time the SES light is on. THis happens 8 out of 10 cold starts.

The car drives fine otherwise

1)Does bad EGR affect fuel milage?
2)Can the temp sensor be changed or does the hole unite have to be replaced?
3)Anyway to know for sure if it is the EGR valve not opening?

The only thing i did to it when it was off the intake is I sprayed carb cleaner in it. Actually i put it uppside down and the sprayed in and left it to soak

I am thinking maybe things got released and deposited further in thus blocking and causing problems....

Help appreciated

Is this a tpi car? If so, then you can check the egr valve by sticking your finger in one of the holes on the bottom of the valve and pushing the diaphragm up. If it is really stiff then it is bad. Does a bad egr affect mileage? When mine was bad I didn't notice a difference. I also had a question about mine. I get code 32 every once in a while and then my check engine light turns off after a minute or two. Could this be the egr solenoid or what?

Yep, this is a TPI Engine

I guess I would have to remove the EGR to do the test you mentioned.

Allthough, not so long ago when I changed the intake manifold baseplate and runners i looked at the EGR valve and I tried pressing it in but it would not move. I didnt know how much pressure those things need to get them to slide in but mine wouldnt and I felt i should not press any harder.

So, most probably that is what is bad. BUT, I still cant get a straight garanteed answer about wiether fuel milage and poorer performance is possible due to a bad EGR. I am getting 12.5 miles per gallons and it is summer so engine is nice and warm at startup.

HELP!

Vacuum applied to the valve is what moves it, and it doesn't take alot of effort to move it. Sorry to tell you this, but you are probably going to have to pull the plenum off again You don't have your specs posted, so it I can't really tell you what kind of mileage you should be getting. I don't know if you notice the port in the intake when you had it off which leads to the exhaust manifold, but I hope you cleaned it!! And P.S. soaking TPI parts in solvents is a technical NO NO. As for EGR relation to fuel mileage, I would have to do some research myself.

Thanks for the reply,

Yea I figure i will have to remove it. As for the ports, they should be very very clean. I installed an edelbrock base plate...

let me know if you find anything about fuel milage

Uppdate

I did not remove the EGR yet but have ordered a new one along with the sensor that screws into it.

I read somewhere how to diagnose if it is the valve or something else...

What i did was as follows:

When the engine was warm i removed the vaccum hose that goes to the EGR. the engine stayed running and there was no sucction at the end of the tube. I then reved the engine and it revved and still no suction. something does not seem right. Anyone know what it may be?

There is some sort of thing that the vaccum lines hook up to and it then hooks up to the ECM. it is right next to the distributor/Coil

Could that be the source of my problem? How can i check to be sure if it is faulty?

Hope someone can help me real fast

Thanks,

Sam

The thing that is next to the distortor is the EGR Solenoid. There are some other posts about it.
