Need injector help FAST!! dealer wants to rake me...
HELP!!!
Brought my 91 Z28 5.7 TPI to the dealer because it was running poorly and I didn't have time to work on it.
First they replaced the alternator, said it was making noise and only charging 12.2 volts. OK, fine. But it did not fix the problem of idle lope and stalling and generally rough running.
Now they have diagnosed 5 injectors that are out of spec. 1 is out of spec on leakdown or balance test, the other 4 are out of spec on the resistance/electrical test. Of course, they suggest replacing all 8. This car is stock except for K&N and Accel SuperCoil.
The real kick is they have quoted $150 EACH for replacement injectors. I see aftermarket VENOM, ACCEL, etc. for much cheaper.
The main question is how good are these aftermarket injectors and which ones are the best choice?
Thank you!!
EDIT: PS - Car has only 35,500 miles - to have bad injectors??

Get your car out of there and never take it back. Ok now that thats out there the multicrap injectors in our cars are known for going bad ive burnt mine out 3 times. Buy a better set for 200.00 or so and do the work yourself, its kindof a pia but not that bad. 150.00 per injector is retarded, did they try to convince you they were made of gold or from mars. Shiesty bastards

Yup, yank that car outta there ASAP. The injectors might be going - but if this problem occured all of a sudden - I wouldn't diagnose them as the primary reason just yet. If there has been a slow decrease in driveability and performance of time, then those may indeed be the primary cause. But with 35k miles.... ehh, I don't know about all that.

It started acting up last year - of course you see I don't drive it too much - and it's just been getting worse.
Probably will pull from the dealer. I can put in a whole set of Ford or Accel injectors for the price (inc. labor) as it will cost to replace the one that is definitely not working at all, and if any of the others are remotely bad as they say, well, then I'm money ahead as I see it to go with a full set of aftermarkets.
Darn sure ain't payin' them $1200 for the injectors plus labor too....

Well, along the same lines. I see choices are mostly 19# (probably not good idea), 21# (Accel) or 24# Accel or Ford SVO injectors.
Since 22# is factory from what I've read, will the 24# be too big? Or, would the 21# Accel be a better choice - the $50 price difference not withstanding
Forgot to mention it does have SLP 3" cat-back exhaust FWIW...
Also, if going with the Ford injectors, are they a true direct fit, no monkey business?? Do I need different O-ring, etc to use, or the ones supplied are OK, etc.?
What would the P/N be of the Ford injectors?

You can't blame the dealer for markup and labor prices...really...you can't get a better warranty on anywork done there.
That said, ofcourse replace all the injectors yourself...Accel, SVO's, etc, etc,..searching will find what you want...you need to decide on preference..i/e I've seen many folks complain about Accels, but I've had them in for 4 or 5 years without issue...so I'd use Accel again, regardless of complaints.
SLP has new take outs for super cheap...check them as well.
Don't waste time/money/shipping to have injectors sent for cleaning.etc, if the coils are weak...I don't think it's cost effective to fix (if possible).
Depending on what you run, may or may not require sme ECM tweaking.

If you run the 21# injectors, you can bump up the fuel pressure slightly to compensate. If you run the 24# injectors, I wouldn't suggest lowering fuel pressure, but I wouldn't worry about the 2lb/hr difference. I'm pretty sure the SVO injectors have rings that are a shade smaller than OEM for our cars, so you might look into those. I have no clue what Accel's O rings are like, but then again, I'm not a huge fan of 90% of their inventory anyways.
Chances are you might use that extra fuel if you start in with any mods anyways. That's just how I look at it - and no - it's not "Optimal," but it Get's Er Dun.

Like Dan said, if you have multec injectors, the first thing you need to do is throw those in the trash. It's easy to tell the multecs. They have a gray plastic looking outer housing. There's a recent thread on here about Rich at Cruzin performance and his injector cleaning services. Lots of happy customers from there, and it's only $12 per injector for cleaning and flow matching. You could always pick up a set of used stock 22lb. Bosch style injectors from someone for relatively cheap and then send them in to Rich for servicing. If you decide to buy new, I'd probably go with the SVO's. I've heard way too many horror stories about the Accel injectors. You could get lucky and get a decent set, but who wants to gamble like that? Besides, in my own personal opinion, their ignition products are a total joke, so I would strongly suspect the same quality on the injectors. Good luck whichever path you choose!

Yeah, the injectors are the multecs...
Sounds like the SVO injectors may be the way to go. But if I can get *genuine* Bosch 22# injectors new set of 8 for $260, would that be a better way to go?
Thanks again to all!!

Got'er put back together with the new injectors.
It's like a new car, hasn't run this good in years!!!
Still a little leery of no injector retaining clips, but no leaks so far...
