father and son project 87z28 help please

I have not been able to log on,.. in the past two or three weeks.
I had to re-join using a this user id instead of Scott in wa.
for some reason it will not work anymore. I have tried to get help but no go with all the suggestions from the web master.

Anyway, I wanted to give an update on our project and ask a few more questions.

I had to pull the tranny to change it to a non lockup 700r4, I installed the new 2500 stall converter bolted the motor and tranny together and dropped it in the car.
its in, it took us about 8 months to get to this point, because of time and money.

When we bought the car the owner had already taken most of the parts off the engine, so for us its like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

I bought headers from summit the elite headman headers with ceramic coating, they look OK but are extremely heavy and well built, for the money I thought they would look perfect, coating is OK but there is weld splatter.
They do not have the air tubes, Iam thinking of deleting all the smog pump stuff.
Can this be done? How do I do it? Will it start?
I have bought several manuals, haynes, chilton, but Iam not happy with either.
Iam looking for a picture of the hoses that go to and from the heater core, can someone post a picture?
I have spent the past couple days trying to find out where all the wiring goes, I have it almost done
I have found the cooling fan sensor but don't know where it goes can you tell me???

Can you tell me where I can look at some pictures on the web of a tpi setup? a picture really helps.
thanks
Scott and son

Can help on a few of these.....

Deleting smog pump..... if it's a serpentine drive system then check the bard technical articles- it's easy to bypass the pump if you have the right length belt and slightly different belt routing info. For an earlier system (v-belts and such) you just leave off the v-belt that goes to the smog pump. In either case you can simply unplug and remove everything else related to the system. The 2 computer-controlled diverter valves are run by the ECM but it won't freak out and throw a check engine light if you unplug them. Easy peezie.

Cooling fan sensor goes in the pass. side cylinder head between the #6 & #8 cylinders. On a single fan system this is the ONLY switch that turns on the fan (unless you turn on the A/C in which case it runs constantly). On dual-fan systems this switch only activates ONE fan, the other being under control of the ECM. There is another article on this board's tech articles section called "ultimate fan control" or something like that which explains how the systems work quite well- I reference it myself regularly.

The return-side line from the heater core on a 3rd gen (the larger 3/4" hose) always gets turned straight down behind the engine. It mates up with a metal tube that goes down the firewall and over to the pass. side frame rail. It turns and continues up the frame rail to within about a foot of so of the radiator. Then another piece of rubber heater hose connects it to a hose nipple on the pass. side end tank of the radiator.

The FEED side of the heater core is different depending on whether it's TBI, TPI or carbureted. Which is yours?

hoses

Ok I got the coolant hoses figured out.

But,
I have a torn hose, its against the fire wall in the back of the motor. almost in the center by the oil pressure sending unit.
It is a molded hose that has a very tight bend it .
What is it called???? so I can order one?
thanks

The application catalogs at your local parts store will have diagrams to help them determine the part numbers of the particular hose you will need. It's a matter of looking at the big blow-up picture and selecting what you need. It likely only has a part number, not a specific name.

Local parts stores are a lot more patient (and experienced) at helping you select the right parts in cases like this than a big chain store would be (Pepe Boys, Autozone, etc.)

Worst case scenrio- dealership. They still can get these parts and have exellent on-line parts lookup systems.

FYI- when removing a hose from an old heater core fitting do NOT just twist and yank it off- you can easily damage the fragile heater core (big PITA to replace it). Slit it lengthwise with a razor and peel if off like a bannanna peel.

hoses

thanks for the info.

I hooked up the starter and most of the sensors so the kid could have some power inside, he is starting to install his maga blaster stereo..hehhehehe

The next problem I am having is the routing of all the little hoses
there are a few. they must be vacume hoses.

There is one particular fitting that hooks to the egr valve inside the fuel rail. the screw in sensor is there, but I can't figure out what hose or is it a wire that hooks to it? what does the fitting that hooks to it look like?

It sure would be nice to find some pictures of all this stuff.
my manuals are very poor.

I have yet to put spark plugs in it and put the headers on.

can some one give me some more help on these small hoses???
could be a tough one.
thanks

car runs sort off

Well, We couldn't wait so with all the vacuum hoses open and unplugged we fired the motor up.
It doesn't run but a few seconds but it sure was music to our ears after 8 months or so.
Sounds nice, kid can't wait to drive it. Maybe another few days.

One thing is we blew the nose cone on the starter, the mounting bolt area is still there but the rest blew up and off the car.

New starter today.
any idea????
it was kind of skipping on the flex plate a bit before this happened.
does it need shim??
how do I do this???
thanks
