Unique 1985 CPU & W. Harness

Hey guys! Im trying to put together a sbc 350 bored +30 with aluminum heads, holley stealth ram, 38 Ilb injectors and a supercharger. Trying to cram al that into a 1985 firebird with the unique wiring harness and cpu. Im only in the aerly stage of the short block assembly, but Im looking forward here, am I going to run into any problems with this cpu and harness? I was just planning on hooking everything back up the same way the original 305 was. Don't have the big bucks for new commander cpu and all that. How does my end result look to you guys?

any result with a supercharger looks good to me. How many psi do you plan to run? What kind of heads, and what about valvetrain. You do not want to neglect the valvetrain, you probably know this but it is key to unleashing most of your power. I am rebuilding my 305 this winter, but no supercharger, yet.

I plan on getting aluminum heads 190cc, 64 cc chambers with 2.02 intake and 1.6 exhaust vales, The fuel pump will be 255 LPH and says it can do 80spi, I plan on having a 9.4:1 compression ratio and going to use the Magnum 280H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft, which says it has a .480 lift and .280 durration, power from 2000-6000 rpm. Im just hoping the cpu and harness from the original 1985 car can be used, know anything about that?

Can it be done? Will it run?
I'm sure it can be done, and it will run.

Will it run at full potential?
No.

You would be best swapping over to speed density, and possibly the syclone computer, which can see boost pressures and adjust the fuel accordingly.

Cause as I see it, boost from a turbo and boost from a supercharger should be pretty much the same.

I was told by couple of people I should swap wiring harnesses with a later years TA, You woulnd't happen to know where I can get good diagrams on the wiring harnesses of later years, would you? And to some hope that I shouldn't completely abandon the harness and cpu that I have, can't nothing be done to it? Can't reprogram or anything to release full potential?

a lot better cam may help with your full potential. Bigger duration and lift. .480 is not all that much if you want to consider a supercharger.

Do a search on the DIY-PROM board and look at the tuning guide.
There is allot of info on the boosted applications.
I'm not sure your ECM can even run a boosted motor. It could be geared up to be reprogrammed/tuned but the base hardware and code is for n/a application with vacuum. For less problems I would look into using the $58 code in another ECM. There are allot of people running that and could provide help for you.
Your at a good stage to begin rewiring with the motor out.

Hi JP86SS !

Thanks for the reply about my 1985 hardware, but to tell you the truth, I look into the DIY-PROM section and Im just lost as a puppy. Even looing into some webpages you offered as guides threw me off, is there a DIY-PROM for dummies anywere? Or I did see a technical artical about splicing the harnesses from my computer to the computer from a 1986-89 TPI, the splicing the harness again rewiring from 86-89 to 90-92 speed density. Would that be a better way to go without learing the whole DIY-PROM thing?
Thanks . . . ,

I can understand your position but i think you going to have to bite the bullet and use either the 1227730 or the 749' ECM if you want to do it correctly. From what I understand the 85' is probably the worst thing to work with because of the add on box that was used.
I run a n/a motor and don't know all the ins and outs of boosted apps (yet)
On the DIY-PROM board there is a sticky on top called the tuning guide. There are several items refferring to the 749 with $58 code.
https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=213539
This one is the FAQ on it and can be found there as well.
there is allot of exact info on repinning from the 730 (90-92 SD) to the 749. Theres also a way to just use the 730 now with the code. Should be lots of help to you.
Maybe start a thread over there asking for guidance. I'm sure some of the guys will jump in and help you get moving in the right direction.

OK, you win,

I am going to use the technical artical to repin from my 830 ECM to a 165 ECM, and burn a chip to run my engine to the max using the cpu from a 86-89 tpi. Im going to start a tread once I get all equipment for burning DIY PROM and go blindly and headstrong into it. Hope you're available for e-mail when I get downright stuck on it, the whole idea about solding and physically modifying the memcal and chip is brnd new to me, never dealt with things like that before. Wish me luck! Thanks for everything guys!

I don't believe the 165 does boosted apps either.
I think you must use the 730 (repinned for $58) or just use the 749 with the $58. The code is designed for boost, the others are not. You will be much happier with the ability to burn a chip and correct tuning issues than to just put parts on and hope for the best from that little silver box
Look around or post where to find schematics for the setup and begin planning the rework of the harness. Shouldn't be tremendously hard just alot of checking to be sure everything goes where it should.
Don't worry about soldering the chips.
Go here for all the parts to do it easily.

i'm not going anywhere but like I said, I can't afford boost and haven't worked with that code. There are many here that have.
