Another 305 Cam question.....

Before anyone flames about not using the search button, I'll let you know that i spent the last three hours reading about cams for the 305 TPI and cams in general. I have read and read but still have no idea on what cam to get for this motor. If my budget wasn't so tight i would get a 350 but being in college i can't afford that.

So enough said i need to know what the best cam for a 305.
The motor is completely stock as far as i know. Although i do have headman shorty headers that will soon be going on.
I was told that these two cams are good choices:
PBM- 290 Duration, .465 Lift
Comp- 260 Duration, .480 Lift

My plans for this motor are the headers, bigger cam, port the pleneum and runners. I'm sure there is more to do but i have no idea.
BTW this is not a daily driver but i do drive it at least three times a week.

If anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it since i am completely new to this.

Thanks for the info. Will you let me know if it make much difference.

I already have a 3in exhaust with duals but its duals from the muffler back. If that matters.

260 or 290? must be "advertised" duration numbers. - The biggest thing you need to look at is @.050 duration. Stay around/under 225, look for around 480 lift. Go dual pattern w/ stock heads(i.e 214/220@.050, 480/484 , not 214/214, 480/480) you'll like the results. - also I noticed your car is an 86. should be flat-tappet, not hyd roller. Makes cams much cheaper...

My cam is 214/224 @ .050 lift and .442/.465 lift. I would not go much larger than this on any TPI 305. carb'd may be a different story but for a 305 with a long runner intake setup like TPI, I would not go any higher than what I have, as a matter of fact if I had it to do over again I would run just a tad smaller duration.

That Summitt cam listed above is a bit on the small side.

Take a look at this Lunati cam avail from Summitt: LUN-60101LK

$190 with lifters inc.

being that your keeping the tpi i would personaly run the comp cams xe256 cam. keeps power between 1200 and 5200rpm. its the cam im currently running and it makes great power and doesnt cause driveability problems. you could get away with the xe262 though with minimal problems

I think that Comps XE256H-12 would be a very good cam for a stock 305.

I wouldn't go larger on duration, but more lift than that would be nice.

More lift won't do much (if any) good on stock heads.

Ok, so what kind of cam would you suggest for my '91 305 TPI? It is stock besides I have a better intake, a set of 113 aluminum heads and A/C deleted. Car has 70,000 miles. Would any of the cams listed above work good for my setup or would a different one be better? I never understood durations and lift numbers of cams. I'm boggled when it comes to cams.
