kind of a wierd problem

So ive been tinkering with the timing lately because of my infamous overheating problem, and after alot of screwing around, i set it back to base. After i did all this, i never cleared the ecm. However a couple of times i didnt clear it after setting the timing and the car wouldnt run..it was start up and then just die like all all power was cut off to it. No stumble or chug..just falls back down to idle from starting up and would just die. Anyway i solved this by clearing code 42. So today i came out to the car and fired it up (mind you i messed with the timing about a week ago and never cleared the ecm) and she fired up like normal but after driving for a short bit, i could feel something was wrong...she sounded like she was gunna stall at every light. Well anyway i continue to start it and drive it over and over trying to think what was wrong. Then one time i finally popped it into drive and it DID stall. So i checked the ecm for codes and it came up 42...i cleared it and now the car runs fine like nothing was ever wrong?...whats the deal with this..anybody else experience it? I just find it wierd that a week later it would do this.

My car is getting a problem like that too- but i kinda think it could be my exhaust leak, and me not having the reprogrammed e-prom yet for my 350.

My car (86 iroc originaly a 305 car, now has a 358 in it) will ilde kinda high, and sometimes it kinda wants to stall out when i push on the accel pedal to go from a light.
To no surprise though - it sometimes throws a CEL showing its running a Lean Exhaust ( i think this is b/c of not having the Eprom reprogrammed yet?)
but however- it does kinda have the same problem..

well code 42 is DIS (direct ignition fault), est short or grounded or fuel pump relay shorted or grounded. I changed teh fuel pump relay today and so far so good, but we'll see. I think my ignition is going...

Hey, SS, quick question on the fuel pump relay change. I'm experiencing a hesitation problem and am thinking its the relay. How long did it take you to swap it out, and how much was the part?

Thanks, Rick

if the problem is an iac, will the computer tell me exactly that, or will it lead me in that direction?

hey it took me 5 seconds and the part is around 10 dollars. The on my car is on the drivers side firewall...theres 3 relays there...2 are for the fans and the middle 1 was the fuel pump

however this wasnt my problem..it was my accel ignition box...it died on me while driving at 50mph..the car just shut off. So i changed back to the factory one and now my tach works too

zz4...before anything see if you can check the voltage at the tps....thats my my hesitation was. I uped the voltage to stock settings again and it was fine again. It was alittle complicated to do it with an unadjustable tps...but i figured out how..if you need the step by step..pm me

well i have pretty much all the symptoms of a bad iac. the idle in park keeps almost dying and saving itself...then when its warm it just goes to like 1200 rpm and idles there. then after slamming into gear, if im lucky it wont stall out. if i hit the gas somewhat hard backing up, to like go uphill, the rpms will go up and then fly back down and not stop to idle. im getting a code too, i should really check it sometime. only got the car running thursday though, and ive had 3 problems otherwise since then, so ive been a little busy.

ahh i see i didnt know it was doing all those things. Well im not sure if it would throw a code for that...but its an easy fix. If you turn the ignition on w/o starting the car and have the diagnostic terminals jumped, you should hear it extending. It makes a clicking noise. If you dont hear anything..then that could deff show theres a problem with it.
