Which to get, TPI Big Mouth Intake or something else?
I am looking for a performance intake for my 1991 GTA (350 TPI). I came across a used TPI Big Mouth Intake for sale. Are these intakes any good? What is a good price for a used one?
While high flow is important, I dont want anything that will let water, dust, debris, etc into my engine. So, safer is better.
Also, I plan on doing heads, cam, headers, exhaust, etc. So, I want a good intake that will support all those mods with adequate airflow.
Does anyone reccomend any other intake?
Thanks again guys!
Bill

For the extra $$$$ u pay for anything from TPIS, you can buy the edelbrock base they port match and charge u dearly for.
Buy an aftermarket base and save soem money and port it yourself or find someone to help you do it.

Wait, wait, wait, is TPI a company? I just thought I meant it was compatible with a TPI engine. Is this compatible with my engine?
He wants $225 for the used part. Is this a good price?
I'm really new to modfying my car. What is a base. Can you reccomend a quality one to purchase? If I was going to get it ported, I'd definately need to get a pro.
I just want the most horsepower out of my engine without letting dust, dirt, and water is inside. As long as the price isn't rediculous and the performance and quality are awsome, I'd be open to any product or brand.

the intake you have on your car is in 6 parts. from top to bottom you have: the throttle body, the upper plenum, the runners on each side of the plenum and then the base.
what you are buying is only part of the problem in the intake restriction. IMO i would research getting like a Holley stealth ram or some other form of intake as you are gonna be around the same price after its all said and done. plus the TPI IMO isnt a good performance intake at all.
and no a base of any sort shouldnt let any debris into your engine unless something is very very wrong.

It's not a "cold air intake (tube with an air filter on it)," it's an intake manifold base (large aluminum piece), which means taking the whole intake manifold apart, and replacing the lower portion of it with a new part that has bigger holes for the air to each cylinder, in lay terms. It's not a newbie install either, unless you're brave and mechanically inclined.
TPIS is a company - Tuned Port Injection Specialties, or Specialists, or Sucking sound as they vacuum your wallet.

Thanks guys, that cleared things up. I'll definately have this professionally installed.
What would you say would give me the most gains in HP, an awsome intake or awsome exhaust? (I'm planning on doing both, I just want to get that one that will give me the more power first).
What are my other options besides the Holley Stealh Ram?

Dont waste the $$ on having someone install it for you.
Get dirty, if u pay to have everything done, your cheating yourself out of more money for mods :-)
If your not inclined or dont have a lot of tools, ask gearheads near you or people on this board.
Just doing a intake if your a first timer should take you a day or a half a day taking your sweet time.
U do it enough u can do it in about 2 hrs lol (i got lots of practice lol)
Best bang for noticeable improvement on a TPI car is full exhaust, menaing headers and catback.
Next best would prolly be full lower intake along with runners and porting the plenum.
The best one if your willing to delve in and learn would be tuning the prom, some of us have literally picker up 2-3 mph and shaved a half second of the 1/4 thru it.
