Healthy LB9 gets 28.5mpg!!

Sorry for the cheesy post guys but I was elated after I checked my mileage this weekend. My fiancee and I went to southern OH to visit friends yesterday. On I75 running 70-75mph I knocked down 28.5mpg. Last time I made a trip like this I got about 25mpg. At this rate it wont take long for my Accel 300+ ignition to pay for itself.

I got 28mpg from my first '91 Z with a LB9 going to the beach many years ago.
It was a 5 speed G92 car.

damn I'm only getting 15.5, and that's with the AC off. but that's only in city mode, can't really get into the extended highway mode out here. I guess I got some more tuning to do.

I believe it.

When I drove my GTA home from Salt Lake City to Chicago I had several 25-26 mpg tanks from it.

Those are highs.

I usually get 23.5 to 24.5 on the highway.

Close to 19 around town if I am nice to it when in town :-)

My Formula did about the same as well.

Both are original 350 cars with 3:23 rears.

later

Yah I am averaging 19-21 back and fourth from work depending on weather, driving style, and how many short trips I make. Just wanted to throw this thread out there to cheer some of us up in the wake of increasing gas prices.

I'm running a LB9/700R in a 40 chevy and can get 25.6 crusing 70-80 on a road trip. Around town, about 19 mpg.
I've tuned the fuel only in ecm and I'm amazed at how good the little engine is. Everyone says "Put a 350 in there!" Why? It runs great and gets Honda gas mileage.

I agree, I had a mild L03 (headers, duals, 4.3 injectors, chip tuning)/700r4/3.08 combo in my G20. I got 20 MPG on the highway. On one 730 mile trip I got 23.4 MPG averaging about 75 MPH (tons of pedal to spare) with the cruise set, the A/C on (Front & Rear), and 6 people with all their stuff. I made the same trip recently and got 20.7 with the 350/700r4/3.73 combo.

...I hit 27.69mpg, round-trip, with the L98 when we came out to pick up that Super Duty hood

Good luck getting that once the 383 goes in. heh

91 Z LB9 AUTO

We got almost 30 mpg on a trip from Chicago to Mpls when we first bought the car, my wife was following behind me, I was driving our truck pulling our travel trailer. We drove at 63 w/cruise, tops in, windows up, a/c off. We thought it was a fluke but have gotten 25 - 28 several times. Our car is a 91 Z-28 LB9 TPI, auto, 2:73, 3" catback, K&N filters, air foil with 78,000. Got to love a car that’s beautiful, quick and gets good mileage. Who needs (or wants) a *****. God Bless America.

I love these cars. What is the sense in getting a honda or something that gets 7 mpg more and has 150 Ft/lbs of touqre less and are no fun.

It's the gas mileage in town, that makes them worth it. 15-16mpg isn't cool. 25mpg is.

To the original poster, that is impressive. The best tank I ever got was 313 miles with 2.73's. What a boring tank that was. I hope to have my T/A running by ID4 so I can see what he does on the highway to and from San Diego.

I don't know of a compact car that will get 25 MPG in town. They all lack torque, so you have to rev the crap out of them to get rolling in a decent manner, where a V8 will just lug along under 2,000 rpm (Floor the V8 a few times in town and watch the mileage go to crap though). My sister drives a 2002 nissan sentra 1.8/stick and it gets about 17 in town and 25 highway. My brother has a 1998 nissan sentra 1.6/auto and it gets 18 in town and 27 on the road. My mom drives an Acura Legend Coupe 3.2/6spd, it gets 16 in town and 25 on the road. My 1983 G20 (350 TBI/4L60E/3.73) gets 14-16 in town and 20 on the highway. My 1998 Express (350 vortec/4L60E/3.42) gets 15-16 in town and 17-18 highway. My 1994 G20 (305/4L60E/3.42) gets 16 in town and 21 on the highway. The only real gas guzzler is the 1994 Dodge 2500 (V10/4spd Auto/3.92), it gets 12 MPG no matter what. In town, Highway, Towing 6K, it gets the same 12 MPG.

Any Hyundai Accent will do that. My GF had one of those little bastards. No matter how we drove, 300 miles per tank in the city. 10.7 gallon tank. I love my TA but it will never EVER touch import soda pop size engined cars in economy. But they will never touch my car either.

'88 Honda Crx - 32mpg city/40mpg hwy - with an engine/tranny/ecu swap from a '94 acura integra gsr(1.8L) - i got about the same mpg with the original 1.6L motor. and the 1.8L motor made 208hp@8200/136lb-ft@6200 with bolt ons. of course it will never compare to the power of a gm v8 car. but with gas prices these days this is my number one get around town car.

Was that 208HP at the wheels? If so, that's going to be one quick little CRX. I'm not a big Honda guy, but I know once they begin to reach the 200BHP area, they become a little more serious. Then again, the CRX weighs what, 2100lbs give or take a hundred? What bolt on's did you do to gain 38HP or more? (B18C1's were at 170 crank HP, so if your figure is BHP, that's more like a 50-55 crank HP gain!) Not trying to start a pro-honda discussion, I'm just really curious about this combination.

technically its a b18c5 in a b18c1 block. forged scat crank, type-r rods and pistons. the C5 was rated at 200hp@8000/134lb-ft@7500 with a redline of 8900rpm. i had the type-r head milled 35,000th's (11.5:1 compression), type-r cams, long tube headers, intake, exhaust, lsd, close gear ratio transmission from the type-r. it has an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on it, but i normally keep it at stock pressure or i wouldnt get the mpg's that i had stated, and when i do bump it up to racing fuel pressure i bet im laying down 20-30 more hp and tq, because i can definately feel the difference. from the factory the '88 crx weighs 1820lbs, with the bigger engine it weighs maybe 50 lbs more. mustang GT's dont stand a chance against me, i leave them behind all the time. i dont mess with camaros, firebirds, corvettes, ect. only cause i dont know if ill win, and i dont wanna lose

Ha, yeah, that's definately not what I'd call a b18c1 with "Bolt on's." That basically IS a c5. If CRX's didn't look so lame (in my opinion) and I could find one not rusted out I'd do one as a project car. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

:-) Good I am not the only "foreign car guy" here LOL hysterically.
I'll post my #'s in a week or two when I get all the little bugs worked out.
In a 2200lb car with the 3.08 LSD I think I should be able to pull some good MPG #'s. The Stock TPI F body guys here seem to be getting far better mileage than I would have thought? My Brother has a built TPI 350 in his 80's Regal and was only managing 22-23mpg But I think with the motor he needs a custom Prom to really make things work out nicely.
BTW for the hardcore USA guys, The Miata was designed and built by Mazda North America. :-)

my formula gets about 13-16 in town depending on how i drive and about 25 on the highway its also untuned so after tuning it should be better correct. its a 355 slp big runners lt4hotcam with 1.5s soon to be 1.6 next check.

I get around 27 or so in my 5 speed LB9 cruising down the highway. I could empty a full tank in an afternoon easy if I am in town though.
