open element K&N for SD Firebirds

Any of you guys using just a K&N in place of the air canister on 90-92 Firebirds? Do you know which filter it is? I had a SLP cold Air I took off my GTA 4 years ago o save for a rainy day,but it got "thrown out" I eventually plan to get a dual SLP,(If I can find one) but want to go the cheap route and just ditch that crap canister.

I have a camaro but I used a K&N RC 5000 filter. I have a speed density setup and I think it looks good.

I've also used the RC 5000, with no problems for many years. Hey Matt, that engine looks nice! Is that one of those Sanden AC systems?

I guess I could go out and measure the opening, where it meetsthe canister, but I think it's smaller than the throttle body opening. It's also round not oval.

It is a Vintage Air system, the compressor is indeed Sanden.

THose are junk, they take in too much hot air. We picked up 4 tenth on my friends vette when we extended the air intake to the front of the rad.

the filter I'm talking about goes directly on the bottom of the intake track, in place of the canister. The opening measure 4X4 inches.

On the speed density trans ams, buy a k&n air filter for a 2003-05 GMC Envoy or chevy trailblazer. Ditch the entire factory air canister and connect the air filter to the intake tube. it is the same hieght as the factory air can.

picked one up at advance, Part # 1009 for $63.78 with tax. I had a brand new purolator in there, but It does seem to pull a little more out on the highway. Feels about the same when I put the $200, and more PITA to install SLP cold air on my GTA, and a little better than a $35 K&N inside the canister. Sound a little different as well. It's not a super tight fit,(I can lift it off pretty easy if I try) but it seems to be good enough. Here's a pic installed. Give it

I thought one of the big advantages to changing the intake tract was in replacing the flat rubber elbow.... so why not just make a 3" pipe with a cone on it?

Here's mine:

You have a MAF car, you can attach a 3 inch pipe to the end of your duct, SD cars have a different duct and can't. You have to replace the whole duct, which you have to get fabricated, is an expense, and probably shows little gain on a stock motor like mine.

MAF car intake elbows are not hard to come across. As you can see I cut one up to make the joint for my intake.

Id think you could find a MAF intake elbow and put a 3" pipe in the end of that for pretty reasonable.

Thats 3" exhaust piping with a miter joint (about 45deg, yes) painted with black crinkle paint.

yeah, you can do that on a SD car, but I really don't think it would be any better than what I did, and it's a little more $,and PITA looking for a MAF or LT1 elbow, then getting a pipe cut, painting etc. Plus, the filter I have is basically in the same spot, and is somewhat bigger, and don't larger filters flow more? I would love to see a dyno comparison of all the different cold air options for these cars though.

I doubt your filter is bigger then mine. Yours is vertical and about the same height as the intake can oiginally was, right? Mines not conical, its a cylinder and its more then a foot long. I took the charcoal can out, it extends all the way across that area and sits right in the hole in the fender where the air comes in.

you might have the same filter then, couldn't tell in your pick(part #1009?) I've seen cars with a small conical attached to the 3 inch pipe.
