Forget that. You may as well learn to diyprom. It's a challenge to learn. A good feeling to know that you can make changes that make the car run better, and get better mileage also.

Use a smaller lift cam and you will be able to get way with out retuning. I doubt you would want to retune your 85. Hardly worth it. That computer is junk and not worth putting any money in to. You can send it out to be tuned if you want instead of updating to a newer computer, but you could do this whenever if you are only going with a mild cam. A tune is always good. A fuel regulator would be a good idea for some tuning at this point. The 305 has a weak cam, and it is probably pretty worn out anyways. The old cam would probably need tuned more than it would for a mild new cam. You can still turn the distributors on these cars as well. As long as the car still runs decently with out many electrical problems you will be able to slide by.

A nice pair of headers, y-pipe, and cat-back exhaust may also give you the nice rough sound you are looking for as well.

i have the comp cams XR282HR with .510 and .520 lift and 230 and 236 duration @ .050. it has a pretty noticeable lope and it doesn't set any codes off in the computer. but mine is a SD system though. don't know if the MAF will change anything. i like it but it really needs a tune. i would go a little smaller though becuase it pushed the powerband way up high, but when it comes on it really comes on. not the best daily driver cam.

I believe the vortec is a little different. It uses the same spring as the cast iron LT1 head. Crane makes a set for those two engines especially, 10309-1 I believe. Good for .550 with no cutting.

I dont care if its MAF or SD, learn to tune if your going to cam it. Even if it works without tuning it will be far short of what it could be.
Dont worry about lope or sounding cool, pick a cam that benefits how the car is actually driven.
Daily driver, street/strip or straight strip.
U will be happier in the long run.
