Ignition upgrade recommendations

I am looking to replace my stock remote mount coil, cap, and rotor with some quality aftermarket pieces. Can anybody recommend a quality brand that will provide better performance? I can smell fuel in my oil and I need to do a tune up anyways. I was thinking that a hotter ignition would help aid in complete cylinder combustion and possibly add a few horses....

Upgrading the ignition would provide no benefit over properly working stock parts.

Yeah, but that isn't the main concern... I'm looking for suggestions on which company I should go with. Accel, MSD, Mallory, etc... What is the most reliable?

Go with MSD coil 8226. Mounts in the stock location. Keep your stock GM module in the dizzy. Go with either MSD or Accel cap and rotor. Lastly, a set of 8mm spiral core ignition wires. I run the Taylor Spiro Pro wires on my car, work great. That's about as good as you can go without spending a LOT more money on an MSD box.

Accell cap and rotor are crap, just like there plugs and wires, stay away.

Buy a blue standard cap and rotor(brass terminals)

Its the same as MSD without the BS price.

I like the MSD 8/8.8mm wires and last longer with headers than other brands I have used.

Replace coil if ancient high mileage, Delco or comparable equivelant.

For the module run a AC Delco and dont forget heat sink compound.

If you've suffering from that you're running rich, curing that will add more horses than swapping out the ignition.

Been down that road and dumped the 6A, accel/pertronix modules. Stay with good stock type wires GM/NGK, MSD coil, good hd cap. Reliability is king and the other modules cost me towing- I love buying 'high perf' anything, but GM got their modules working better than anyone else's- MSD told me that their replacement computer controlled dist runs a GM module. The Accel module worked good when it worked.

I'm running the Hypertech coil, cap, and rotor kit on a stock L98. It made a noticeable difference after I opened the gap on the spark plugs to sixty.

Stock GM parts for your ignition would work just fine.

A sixty gap sounds way too large for a stock L98.

The stock GM HEI is accually really good @ its job. A new coil and a good set of plugs ( opened up ever so slightly ) and spiral core 8mm or better wires are more than what most people are ever going to need! Don't trow money away on high dollar boxes and Dizzy's, in most cases these high$ parts will cost you more money in the long run due to too much spark energy that can cause tracking in the cap, cross ignition in the wires, and possibly accelerated wear on the plugs.

I tried an Accel module in the distributor & I think it just puked in less than a year & less than 1000 miles stick with the Delco module!!
I have the Taylor wires & Msd cap & rotor. They seem good. Stay away from the fancy plugs too. AC Delco plugs are just fine.

Regular replacement AC DELCO parts are fine for a stock motor.

I used with success:

-MSD coil
-MSD 8.5 wires (never use Taylor- JUNK)
-Accel cap/rotor
-Bosch Platinum plugs gapped at .45
-stock module (never had one go out on me)

For MSD wires, what part # do you guys use? I have a 92 GTA with edelbrock headers... I see so many different sets and I dont know which to get. Angled boot or stock, blah blah blah. Any advice? I have some heat shield wraps I currently put over the plug head to protect from the heat from headers.
