Creating a Budget 305 Powerhouse
Hey everyone.
Im looking to dive deep into the 14's or get into the high 13's.
Here is my current set up:
1989 Iroc-z
LB9
700-R4 Tranny
3.42 10 Bolt Disc rear
16" Iroc wheels ( rear BF Goodrich radials)
Limitations:
Must keep emissions legal
Must keep emissions system beside pass rocker cover
Must Keep catalyic convertors
Must keep 02 stuff
Must keep AIR stuff.
What i already have:
LT1 Cam (.447 Lift)
LT1 Roller Lifters
Edelbrock Emissions legal headers with custom Y-pipe
PLANS:
engine:
Summit 1.6 Roller Rockers (bring cam to approx .480 lift)
Comp Beehive springs (Concidering this part, havnt really set mind on it)
Thunder Racing Air Foil
Pypes 3" cat back
Taylor Spiro pro ignition cables
Stage 2 Shift Kit in 700R4
2400 Stall with lock up
Have been concidering a LT1 intake set up on this (with modifcations) and potentially modified LT1 Heads.
What are your takes on this?
What would your reccomend i add? Change? Take away?

None of the items you listed are going to do that much, little here little there kinda thing. What does the car run now? Without knowing that, kind of hard to suggest parts because your car may be faster or slower than others because of numerous factors.

Well, i have never run the car in the strip, to be completely honest, i have never run the car at all. I just bought the car, but would like to wake it up a bit.
I know the cam should wake up the little 305 a bit, and im hoping the 1.6 rockers should help out a bit too, im hoping to get about 195rwhp out of my set up.
Though everything id like to do, i would prefer to be able to switch over to a L98 that will go in to the car winter 2007.
I already have the cam and lifters, so that i will put in regardless.

195 whp wont be hard at all with that list and the lt1 intake would make you lose a good chunk of low end but would scream up top i think you should plan to run mid to low 13's with a lt1 swap and more cubes{350} and that list as long as you can hook

i had a built 305 back in the day and the tpi is better then the lt1 intake on a 305,trust me i did it.i have the same cam i used in my 305 for sale in the classifieds. It ran me to a 14.6 with unported tpi intake, and 373 gears,i think 342 gears would have been a little better as it was a torque monster for a 305..The cam i have for sale is a comp grind, 210/220 .480 lift on a 112 lsa..150 shipped and you can take it has only 6k miles, practically new..

Thats a good deal on that cam. I spent $280.00 on my cam alone.
When you swap your springs.....make sure you buy new valve seals!

You're in pretty good shape to be pretty quick. Honestly, if you're going to do the cam swap port the crap out of the base/plenum then see if you can dig up a set of runners for a decent price. Past that, I'd probably end up with a custom tune and forget the air foil.

yeah like said above if you do any cam really port the base as much as you can and the plenum, find a set of high flow runners if ya can and you can get into the 13's if you have a 5 speed and 342 gears.i have seen it done years ago.

Well some guys have gone a good bit into the 13s with bone stock heads, but I recommend porting the stock iron heads or running the L98 vette heads. All I have done is headers, cam, heads and ported intake and went 13.70 @ 100.5 with a crap 60ft time. You can do all that and be emissions legal as well. The biggest improvement for a TPI 305 is helping it breathe. Cat back exhaust and Headers first, then cam and ported intake, then cylinder heads, in that order. It is easy to make a 305 run.

Thanks for the input everyone!
I will be getting a set of edelbrock TES headers on friday (emissions legal), and i already have a 3" catback.
The engine is apart right now (tpi system is off, and front half is off for LT1 Cam)
Would you reccoment i pull off my heads at this point to do some gasket matching? And port the base, runners and intake openings aswell?
I plan on putting in an airfoil and heard that i should grinf off the TB wall on the plenum.
Its got a 700R4 with a stage 2 shift kit, and 3.42 gears
thanks!
Sheldon
