anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku

anybody ever used this? wondering how well it performs not for my car but for my new project car. it is non roller 1986 so if i can get me a cam kit for $125 and really pick up 40 hp it will be worth it to me. im going to have to change the harmonic balancer so i figured id just pop the timing chain off while im down there and pull the intake and swap the cam. let me know what you guys think about it if you think it will help that much imma slap it in there.

Re: anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

I used it for about 10 miles

I was having problems with wiping cam lobes so I bought that kit because it was cheap.

for the little time I drove it, it seemed to have decent power and the throttle response was pretty good.

If I had a non roller block and it was a project car on a budget I would definatly recomend that cam kit

use the springs!

Re: anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

I have that exact camshaft waiting to go in my non-roller L98. I didn't buy the complete "TPI" kit with the springs because I have new heads already equipped with (obviously) new springs. I also have 1.6 roller rockers to raise the gross lift a little. (.448"/.471" VS. .420"/.442")

I hope to have it in within the next 2 weeks and will make a post with my impressions of it. Considering my car made 239rwhp/359rwtq with a semi-clogged cat and a wiped cam lobe on the stock cam, I'm pretty sure this mild cam will suit me just fine.

I absolutely will post, if not here, in a new thread. I hope to have it in and back together by next weekend.

IMO, you have a lot more (better) options with a roller

Finally got it back together. So far, I think it's a great option to a stocker. No idles issues. No driveability issues and very responsive throttle. It will lug aroung in OD at 1200 rpm's, yet rev cleanly to 5500.

Here's a video I made today after a fresh oil change.

Re: anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

I put the complete kit in my wife's TPI back in the winter.
Her car will be ready to fire next week if everything goes okay. It looked like a good deal. I had the heads prof ported while building engine.
I hope the combo works good witn 1.6 rr.
I'll let you guys know if it runs.
Ron

Today is the 3rd day driving it so far and it has been great.

I let her rip once OR TWICE today and it feels like a new car.

Re: anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

I am very picky when it comes to driveability. I hated my hotcam and I semi-dislike my LPE219. The Summit 204/214 was completely tame, great powerband as Bob said, although my combo ran outta steam before 5000rpm but most likely due to the swirlport heads and stock TPI. Overall, driveability was awesome after it was tuned.

Re: anybody used the summit tpi cam kit?

Maroon88iroc....Do it...you will love the power. I know a guy who used that cam in a 305 with a airfoil and a Cold Air Intake, and he ran a 14.9 at 8000 altitude . Thats about High 13s or low 14s down at sea level. You will enjoy it alot. But you can save time by pulling the radiator and stuff off the front of the car and just leave the engine bolted in. If you wernt going to do it that way, I would.

Good luck buddy!
