More power!

Hey guys, I recently purchased an 88 Iroc with a brand new 305 in it. It has a some pretty decent power but I want more. I put a set of shorty headers on it, underdrive pulleys, a/c and smog delete pulleys, and K&N filters. I want to put a cam in it but here is the kicker. Car is NOT a daily driver, so I want to go poweful but attain great driving characteristics. I have heard that I can put a LT1 cam in it for a 94 or new camaro/firebird? is this true? recemended? What will I need different rockers/valve springs? I have thought about doing the LT1 intake swap, will it help on a 305? I have a 2,300 stall and stock rear end at the moment.

Re: More power!

First you have to set your goals. How much power are you looking for? 300, 400 or 500 at the wheels. 300 and your fine with the tpi setup. 400 hp and you will need LT1 intake and some seriously mods (if your still using that 305 motor). 500 hp+ maybe you should consider swap for a bigger engine such as a 383.

Basically in the end it really comes down to setting your goals and then looking at your options.

Re: More power!

I dont plan on swapping this motor out. Its only got approx 5,000 miles on it so I figure just hop it up. I have a 383 in my truck. I just am curious what I should run for a cam and valve springs and as far as heads that would really make this run strong. I plan on gettting an aluminum drive shaft soon. I already have alot of suspension mods done. I want to get this running low 13's all motor and still get decent gas milage. And hopes or ideas anyone?

Re: More power!

so if I put in a stock lt1 cam in it, do I need to put different valve springs in it? I have bone stock heads right now. Second question, are the 305 and 350 heads the same thing? I have head alot of people putting aluminum L98 heads from a corvette onto 350's bu can I do that with a 305? Could I use LT1 aluminum heads on a 88 305? Thanks for all the help. I'm a budget but I know how to work on my car so I'm trying to save a few $$$$

Re: More power!

I reseached the same topic when i was considering of swaping my current stock cam with a LT1 or LT4 cam (I have a 88 LB9 auto).

However the cam with your setup will be a mismatch like obeymybird has stated earlier. Basically where the LT1 / LT4 cam starts making power, your TPI setup runs out of breath.

And of course the LT1 / LT4 are older cams (10-15 year old technology) so there are better, more efficient new cams out that. That what some of the members have told me and come to think of it, they have a point.

Of course if you mod your tpi intake (SLP, Edelbrock, TPIS) or swap with a LT1 and do some head work or even swap heads. You will benefit from the LT1 / LT4 cam however like I said earlier there may be a better cam for your setup dont limit yourself to just one or two cams (check the comp cams website, they also have a database of articles that you may find useful).

Re: More power!

The 113 aluminum Corvette heads are a good match for the 305 with their 58cc combustion chambers. They are good heads to go LS1 hunting with.

Re: More power!

113 Corvette Heads = L98 aluminum Corvette heads(TPI Corvettes). I believe they are also on the ZZ4 crate motor. I have seen a good used pair for about $500+. Shouldn't be real hard to find a pair, especially with the internet these days. -Nick.

Here are some pictures:

Another post on them:

Do some searches and you should come up with everything your looking for. They are easy to install if you have experience pulling distributors, intakes, and of course heads. If I ever build my 305 up any more these are my next mod. -Nick.
