Timing Gurus - timing tab and lack thereof
Timing Gurus - timing tab and lack thereof
Hi Guys
A buddy and I replaced the timing chain and cover a few years back on my 89 LB9 5speed. The new Mr. Gasket chrome cover didnt' have the timing tab with it hence, I cannot check the timing of my vehicle - yes, it was 9 years ago and we didnt know any better
So the other day I noticed that Mr. Gasket sells timing tabs separately that bolt to the same bolts holding the cover on.
Does anyone know which one I need? 7 inch or 8 inch style and specifically which model? I'm looking at the summit website and they seem to carry a few different ones.

I believe our cars came with a 6 3/4" balancer. 7 should work fine. Get whichever you like. Adjustable, in most cases, isn't necessary.

Buy the 7" and it is the second and third bolts on the right hand side from the top. Super easy, I just did that a couple weeks ago only thing I had to remove was the tpi filter cover

The markings on the stock balancer won't work well with a timing pointer in that location.

You can use it, but you'll need to find TDC with a piston stop and remark the balancer.
Re: Timing Gurus - timing tab and lack thereof
we took off the balancer when we did the chain. Do you think its possibly not in the correct location? I remember that there was a keyway of sorts for it to slip on insuring that it was in the correct location.

From 1969 to 1985, the timing pointer was at about the 2:30 position, which is the location of the bolt-on timing pointer. Your factory balancer is marked for a timing pointer in the 12:00 position. Your timing will be about 40 degrees off if you try to use the pointer with the existing balancer mark.

Apeiron, are you sure it was till 1985?? I bought my 84 L69 99% original, and my tab marks 12:00.

I could be wrong. It might have been earlier or later, depending on application.

put the timing pointer on there. find top dead center and make your own mark. i use a white out pen. a stock balancer that has any miles on it will be off a little anyway. the rubber gets hard and they slip. it probably wouldn't hurt to get one of those fancy balancers that have all the degrees on them.

You could also just get a balancer cover that has the correct markings on it to slip over your balancer.
