PLEASE HELP! Which K&N filter should i get? the 600cfm or the 1000cfm???

I got a 1991 camaro with a 305. i have all the regular mods like exhaust...ect. I now have a ram air hood and im gonna put one of those K&N's that hook directly to the TPI so the engine can get more air from the hood opening. should i get the 600cfm or the 1000cfm? What is the differance between the two?
Thanks,
Alan

Do you have the stock Throttle Body? I think that would play a factor in the amount of air flow you need

------------------
-Red '88 IROC 5 Speed 305 TPI w/3.08
-Dual Friction Centerforce Clutch
-Accel 300+ Racing Ignition
-Accel 300+ Pro Sleeve Plug Wires
-Accel U-Groove Plugs
-Flowmaster Force II 3 Chamber Cat Back Exhaust
-Hypertech Chip
-Hypertech Airfoil
-Removed, Then Re-installed (out of fear) MAF Screens
-Gutted Air Box

Why not get the bigger 1000cfm. I mean hey you will never need more than that and these things last forever. It is a little bigger but I got the 1000cfm and I have had it for 5 years and everything is peachy.

You're better off keeping the stock intake, rather than put the filter right on the throttle body. That will just suck the hot engine air directly into your TB, killing power.

No I have ram air hood and the filter will be getting cold air directly from the outside because the filter goes up in the scoop right behind the opening.
Is the 1000cfm filter taller or longer?

Go with the 600. I know a guy with a 91 T/A who bought the 1000cfm filter, and could not use it because it was too wide, it came in contact with the A/C compressor and the alternator bracket, I believe.

Get the 600cfm as the 1000 will be to large to fit up nicely. However, even though you have the SS hood it won't make much of an improvement as the engine will suck hot air unless your moving. I had this same setup a while back. I decided to make a cold air system and move the filter away from the TB. I picked up 1mph and dropped almost 2 tenths in the 1/4. You can see my custom air intake on my webpage.

Well i already ordered the 1000cfm before i got your replies so i guess i will just try it. If it doesnt fit i will just send it back and get the 600cfm one. O and im making a box around the filter which will be sealed to the hood so its always getting cold air from the outside. at NO time will it be getting air from the engine bay.

Mr J is correct... If your wanting to connect it directly to the throttle body, the 1000 CFM unit will not clear the TPS switch OR the Coolant filler neck.

I also agree with Kevin. The 600 cfm unit (which is the one I have) hurt my times at the track.

Yes I forgot to mention that I had to put mine down at the end of the intake track. We tried it on the TB and it didnt fit, Though think about it the 600CFM is all the air you will ever get. Sorry but I need more than that now coming through my air filter

Listen to Kevin91z, he is the correct one here. Mounting the filter on the throttle body sucks in HOT air. Even the guys with the opened up Formula hood still will suck in hot air.

The way the 1000cfm filter is useful is if you mount it on some PVC pipe and connect it to your elbow.

I just saw you said you had a ram ir hood. Your still better off mounting it in the inner fender.

Hey guys-
Just curious, but how could the fenderwell be better that a direct "ram air" like he's making? Just wondering because I have the TB mounted K&N and it works great especially in the winter, and if I get a ASCD ram air hood I wanted to do what he is doing. I do have a Cone K&N off my GTA aprts car... I thought about polishing some 3" aluminum pipe or something and putting it over where the stock box was. I think ZBRA from cZ28.com did this, maybe it was someone else over there though?! L8R

I had the exact same problem when I swapped TPI on to my truck, I did manage to get the 1000 cfm to fit on the stock TB but is is all crooked and doesn't look too great. If anyone has some pics of an extension hose please e-mail me.
