DONT TAKEOUT THE MAF it is verry important to the car. there are many more things to be replaced besides that., a good catback, tuneup, port th eintake plenum and runners and intake manifold. in 86 yo uhave waterpump dirven fan? if so a switch to a electrical would do prety good. just search the boards there is some good info. check the tech articals aswell

make a homemade ram air, theres an article on it around here somewhere. Also, i dont know if you want to spend like $120 or so on a JET stage 2 chip, but my after the ram air, and catback, my friend put one in his 86 IROC and it made a noticable difference. Down the road you may need to replace it with a custom one, but for now, I'd consider it.

Gut the air box (cut the sides off) and replace your ac delco with a K&N ($30). Then run a piece of tubing from the snorkel on your airbox , to the inside of your fender. OH yea, you have to relocate the carbon cannister. I put mine sideways and put it behind the passenger headlight so I could face the air filter towards the inside of the passenger fender.

Gut your MAF. DO not remove it. Take off your plenum, if you look inside there is a wall behind the opening. Take the wall down with a dremel and some sanding pieces.
Bump your timing to 10* (remember to remove the est wire. Its a brown wire over your heater box). Adjust your TPS sensor, dont go over .62 (TPS sensor is the orange plug by your throttle body). Take out your spare tire and jack from the car.

You will notice a nice increase in performance for only $30. Next mods should be in order : catback, headers, airfoil. Summit sells a cam package for your year since you dont have a roller cam. It says it adds like 40hp.

Dont buy a Jet chip. Get a custom one burnt. Ed wright does a good job for $350 (www.fastchips.com) A lot of people will tell you to burn your own, if you have the knowledge to do so then do it. Otherwise custom chips work just fine.
I think thats all.
Whens the last time you did a tuneup? Cap, rotor, pcv valve, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs?

Somewhere in your plans, you will have to change the cam. The 86 TPI has the dreaded 'peanut' cam, which is doing no favors for performance at all.
