Cone air filter

Since the MAF ended in 89, a cone air filter can be installed right onto the throttle body of 90-92 tpi. Other than taking out the air box, creating less weight and space, what would be the atvantage or disatvantage of using the cone air filter?

It's really MORE of a disadvantage since you're getting more HOT air in. I believe somebody tested it and found at least 6-7 HP loss... but I did it on the GTA anyway because it looks better... it's not a runner anyhow...just a cruiser. If I rigged up a opening in the TA hood vents it would probably help restore some of it. I just notice a little doggedness on hot days otherwise it's no big deal. Get lot of intake sucking noises when it's started up cold.

I tried one on my '90 IROC 5.7, and I say it performed better with it over the stock setup. I know everyone says it is drawing hotter air, but that hotter air sure doesn't have far to go. Another thing I liked about it is the 'open element' sound at WOT. If you use one (K&N)I recommend installing the coolant throttle-body bypass. I actually melted the rubber mounting flange to the point that it was no good before I noticed it. The aftermarket 'cold' air induction kits are also located in the 'hot' engine bay but they seem to work well. I don't know how much of a temperature difference there is between the battery location where the aftermarkets draw air from (SLP)and the area in front of the throttle body where the cone filter sits, but it can't be great.

The cold-air kits get their air from the fender, where its much cooler than behind the radiator. Try putting your hand between the radiator (watch out for the fans) and your engine sometime, then put your other hand over by the battery. You'll feel a big difference.

Yep Kevin is right again.
Look at the design of the SLP cold air induction kit. It bolts right inside your fenders.

If you want the cone filter, do what GMHTP did. Use the stock elbow, extend with PCV or exhaust pipe and mount the cone filter on to it.

So does the SLP actually have a hole cut through the inner fender and pulls outside air from the fenderwell? If that is the case then heck yea, its got to be better. If not, I still don't see much temperature differential between the two locations. Its all captive air under the hood, and if anything the intake would cause the hotter air to be drawn to it's location. Yes/no, maybe?

There already is a hole in my passenger fender, stock. The SLP unit connects to that hole. But it requires moving the battery. You can also put up some walls around the filter to shelter it from the hot engine air. I've seen people do that too.

Yea, the SLP setup is kinda a setup you can make your own at home.

The single cold air SLP setup looks like a black scoop. Bolts inside your fender as Kevin said. The air intake elbow has dividers in it also.

The dual SLP intake requires you move the battery to the trunk. PITA.

You can do a similar setup by taking a dual tb intake elbow off any stock 5.7L Camaro and using piping. That's what I plan to do.

I had the filter right at the throttle body and it not only sucks in hot air hurting performance, but it also is very inconsistant. i.e. when the fans kick on and the engine temp goes down, your times go down. When the fans come off and the temp goes up, so do your times. I have researched this and done extensive track testing.

My solution was a "custom" cold air like mentioned before. I used an elbow from an '88 firebird TPI, 3" exhaust w/ a bend in it, black plastic w/ some weather strip, and a cone filter. This mod was good for a SOLID and CONSISTANT .2 off the 1/8th. It didnt' matter what the engine temp was. Ck out the pic
