Code 44 - Oxygen Sensor Bad???

Can anyone help me? The other day I was stuck in the damn snow and as I was trying to get my car unstuck it started acting funny and died on me! I started it back up and it stuttered and died! I check the diagnostics codes and got a code 44! The local parts store looked it up and said that code 44 was that the ECM was recording low voltage to the Oxygen Sensor for an extended period of time! I went out to try again this morning and it started, ran for about 10 seconds, stuttered and died! I started it again and held my foot on the gas...the engine stuttered as it reved up and then started backing down even though I hadn't let my foot off the gas....as it reached low RPM's I could hear detonation in the engine! When I let my foot off the gas it would stutter and die again! Could this all be caused by the Oxygen Sensor?? Anybody have any idea on what's wrong?? Please let me know! Thanks!!

O2 reading was 12???? What exactly does that mean! Is there a way to test the O2 sensor?? Is this a test you did on your car?? I've never had an O2 sensor problem so I'm pretty dumb when it comes to the O2 sensor!

Sounds like possibly your fuel pump is dying. Code 44 does mean low voltage from the O2 sensor, but to put it bluntly, low voltage means lean exhaust. Yes, an O2 sensor can cause a code 44, even if the car isn't running lean, but usually won't cause it to keep stalling. The detonation is another clue that you are really lean. Check the fuel pressure.

I have sorta the same problem. Last night I put the stock rated 195 deg. stat in my car and started it up to check for leaks and to watch it warm up and just see if it all was going to work. Everything looked fine and I decided to go for a ride. Last week I got a code 13, O2 sensor. This is after my header install. (I know about the 3 wire sensors) but check this out. On start up it acted the way the guy stuck in the snow described. The same thing, only after a minute of keeping it alive by feathering the gas pedal, and setting the screw on the throtle lever alittle bit. Anyway, it warmed up fine after that. On the ride it felt o.k., but I drove 2 miles found an empty street here on base and got on the gas. It pulled great then all of the sudden, SES lights up and then it starts to run weaker and kinda crappy. Is this my O2 sensor or am I going to face the nightmare of the fuel pump replace/install? Should I try a new fuel filter first? I need my car. My wife is coming back from visiting her mom and dad tomorrow and she will need the Bonneville back and I need to get this 'bird running right. Thanks.

Chris
