Which Convertor?

Is the Vigalante really worth the $600+ compared to the $300 SLP one?
Everyone raves about Precision Ind..
Just wondering.

Everyone but one -- me. I paid $1000 for a multi-disc Vigilante, the most expensive one they sell that is designed to be locked up at WOT. I did not gain even one-thousandth at 60 feet from my previous Pro Torque 10.5-inch converter. Vigilante claims the highest torque multiplication of any manufacturer (2:5 to 1), BUT I did not see any improvement over my 2:2 to 1 Pro Torque.

All I gained with the Vigilante is the ability to lock up my converter without premature failure and a BIG hole in my wallet. If I had to do it all over again, there is no doubt in my mind that I would go with another Pro Torque (www.protorque.com).

I must also state that my experience is not the norm. Everyone else seems to be very happy with the Vigilante. But maybe that's because they never owned a Pro Torque??? Maybe?

You may also wanna take a look at Yank converters. They have an excellent website and explains why the highest torque multiplication is not always the best for your application. They are in the same class and price range as the Precisions and Pro Torques and they are pretty popular with the LS1 crowd. My next converter will be a Yank, to replace my generic TCI unit. www.converter.cc

At the time I replaced my nine month old Pro Torque, there were two factors:
1) I had just blown the 3-4 clutch in my 700R4, which meant transmission removal and
2) I was running out of engine at the top end at the track. This necessitated either a lower rear gear ratio or manually locking up the converter.

I inquired to Pro Torque about manually locking up the converter and was told by Joe Rivera (owner), "You burn a bulb twice as bright, it will last half as long." That told me I should not be manually locking up the converter. Then I called Terry (owner of Precision). I was "sold" that their multi-disc converter is the only one on the market that is designed to withstand the abuse of locking up at WOT -- that the Buick GN guys all run his converter. There at three choices of the 9-1/2 inch Vigilante. The "standard" with a one-disc lockup (this design is standard with any manufacturer and not designed to be manually locked up, the three-disc and five-disc lock up. Considering the power level my engine is at, I decided to spend the $$$ and get the best, a five-disc Vigilante as opposed to spending $$$ on a rear ratio swap. In addition, Terry said I would definitely see a 60-foot improvement because of their torque multiplication ratio being the best in the business. Heck the tranny was already being removed, so I figured this was the most cost effective solution.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have stayed with the Pro Torque and changed my rear axle ratio (from 3.73 to 3.42) and not worried about manually locking up the converter.

Bob, it's about 1500 RPM, I'm told.

I recently swapped from a Summit/TCI 12-inch converter to a Turbine Technologies 12-inch / 2500 RPM converter this past fall. I dropped 4 tenths in the quarter mile, and 60-foot times dropped about 1/8th second. At $165, it's a great deal! It's probably not for super high performance, however. It's a good value for engines making 350 or less crank HP I think, however. It certainly works good with my little 101MPH capable 305!

I'm thinking about the Protorque 12 inch 2500 stall or the Vigalante 9.5 inch 2600 stall. I've heard quite a few good things about both but is there alot to be gained by going with the Vig?
The Protorque is $400 and the Vig is $700/

I am going with the GM S-10 DBLF converter, part #24202310..from what I have read it stalls around 2100 and costs around $150-$200. I can use the extra $400+ dollers that the Vigilante runs to do other mods with. (Although I was impressed with the 9lb weight savings of the Vigilante.)
