Gutted Air boxes with snorkel
Now I've been doing my research and I'm getting a bit confused. On my '85 Z28 305 TPI, gutting the air boxes consists of what? I know under my filters there are little blast sheild things. Are those what I cut out? Or do I cut holes on the sides near those sheilds?
If I cut the shields out, is that recommended for the rainy state of wa? Can water get up in there? I know Using the RAM AIR TPI setup, there is a possibility of rain causing some serious damage.
Thanks!

Ive cut all that out and rain hasent hurt my engine yet and i know 2 other people that has done this and theirs have been fine... RIght now you dont have a ram air set up, you just have gutted air boxes, i dont think it has much of a ram air effect until mabey you route some flexy hoses from the filters directly to a direct air source, the best place to do this would be to remove your fog lights which is the main reason i havent done this yet, or somehow rig the hoses up under the front spoiler. Hope this helps, ill look for a link with a Map of how to make a home made ram air....
But to answer your question gutting the airbox is sawing all that box out under the filters.

Rednek: You may want to use flex hosing mounted underneath the car, and route it up the fender towards your airbox. If you are worried about rain.. Point it towards your airbox, but don't connect it.
Yes rain can do serious damage and I've seen it happen before to a low mileage IROC.
