Modifing the stock throttle body

Now I know this is a rare question. But is there a way of modifing a stock throttle body? I'm running a 406 with a tpi intake with slp runners(ported to the max) and a stock throttle body on it. Is there a way of porting the throttle body to increase air flow? Now I know if you was to port toward the front side you would need new blades for it. Has any body done any thing like this modification? Or has any body even heard of this? Or is there a web site where someone showing how this is done?
Any replies will be greatly appreciated!

Yes, Brad Urban at The Carb Shop does that.

but you can get bigger TB's used for less than to modify one.

Check out daniel burks site, he will send you one that has been bored out to 52mm and add an airfoil for $225 in exchange for yours. You might want to check, but I'm pretty sure thats right.

Maybe you could just email daniel burk and ask him how he does it. I have heard though that it should be left up to professionals, but then again, maybe you are.

The fit between the blades and the bore is precision. Wouldn't want to have them stick open!!! Probably be able to do this with a brake cylinder hone. Prob is making new throttle blades without a punch.

hey brad, i have a 406 sbc and was considering using a tpi setup, with larger runners , and throttle body , and ported base and plenum, let me know how your setup is coming along, as i have been told that the tpi wont work very well on a 400 , but being on a budget, i intend on using it . and i would like to know what kind of problems u run into, and so on, give me an e-mail. thanks.

I remember reading awesite on how to bore a throttlebody out a LONG time ago (pre-thirdgen.org), probably was based out of f-body.org since that was the only good resource back then. Now that f-body.org is gone i wouldn't have any idea on where to look.
Basically, it did involve a brake cylinder hone. And every so often you would have to stop to fill some passages with epoxy, then continue. I recall it also had good directions for making new blades. Keep in mind, throttle blades are eliptical, not perfectly round.
I know not much help, but if you are really motivated you might be able to find it somewhere. Like i said, this was a long time ago, so not only are 99% of the old regulars who may have seen it gone, but who knows how many of them read the same piece anyway.

Well, I have seen this pop up a few times, and yes you can do it youself, however, if you do not do it well, you wil become fast freinds with the epox. As for the blades, IIRC you can use some of the GM six bangers' throttle blades, some of them were 52mm.

Using production pieces for your new throttle blades is a great idea. I knew of a local guy here that made his own back in the early 90's. He was a machinist and removed all of the central metal and put in one big oval shaped blade. It shouldn't be too hard unless you have to re-bush the throttle shaft.
good luck
