What head gaskets are you using? I used the FelPro 1010's and never retorqued. Right now the car is apart and I will probably retorque them. You only need to do it once. Let the car heat up to operating temp. Let it fully cool. Retorque. Done.

I've never had to retorque heads. What kind of bolts are you using ? and what are you putting on the threads?

I´ve also changed heads and I´m thinking of
retorquing the heads. But if you do, what
about the thread sealer on the bolt-threads,
does it work or do you have to put thread
sealer again?

Whne I was running TFS heads, I just used Corvette L98 head bolts that already came teflon coated. I also never had to retorque.

What head bolts were you using Tim on those AFRs???

I did not retorque either set of aluminum heads that I put on my engine.

I used FelPro 1010 head gaskets and torqued down the haed bolts in the specified sequence in three passes, each pass at a higher torque value, 45, 60 then 75 (if I remember correctly). Also, you got to hardened thick washers.

Again - I never retorqued. However, since FelPro recommends to retorque on 'performance oriented engines' I am contemplating doing the 'retorque' thing after I get my most recent mods done. But, I may not - who knows

You do not have to worry about the thread sealer on the bolts AS LONG AS you used a non hardening sealer like ARP's Teflon sealant.

Kev - I am using ARP 12-point head bolts with hardened washers.

It is recommended to torque to 65ft/lb with aluminum heads. I torque to 75 which can be slightly dangerous depending on the heads. The AFRs are really thick castings and won't warp like the L98 aluminum heads. So, I can get away with a little more torque.

I've done three sets of aluminum heads and never re-torqued them. I just bought a set of AFR heads and they only say to re-torque if you are running high compression , nitrous or a SC.

Is it possible that your deck surface of the block could be warped?
Have you had your torque wrench recalibrated anytime in the near past? It may need it, especially if it is a "click" type and if it has been stored or left on any setting besides 0.

Also, besides the basic three step torquing, it is a good idea to come back several hours (or the next day) after torquing and back off the fasteners 90° and torque again. They will usually pull down a little more than they did the first time even though the same torque spec is used.
