Timing on an '85 Iroc

At what degree should I time this '85 Iroc at? Or do I pick up the timing mark through the probe hole?

First off you will need to loosen the distibutor hold down bolt so you can turn your distirbutor to the desired timing. Then dissconnect your EST connector. The EST is located just above the AC and Heater blow boxes in the back passenger side corner of the engine compartment, it is a brown and black wire the comes out of the main wireing harness. Then hook up your timing light to the battery and the #1 plug wire, as close to the plug itself as possible. I usually mark the timing mark on the harmonic damper with some chalk so its easier to see with the timing light. Then start your engine and turn your distributor until you see the correct timing reading on the balancer. Then shut off the car, disconnect the timing light and tighten down your distributor. Hope this helps!

Dan,
Everything you said was correct, except for the ESC connector. The 85's used the coil in cap type coil with a 4-wire connector behind the distributor you have to disconnect. Also, the timing should be 6 degrees BTDC.

6 Degrees - would that also apply to the 305 engine like mine? Since everyone who responded seems to have the 350.

Dan is right also, but it's not the wires you disconnect here, it's a vacuum hose connected to the distributor. This will give you your base timing reading, and set it at 6 degrees.

My 85 Z also has the brown disconect by the AC box. I have a coil-in-cap but do not have a vacuum advance.

Ok, maybe it's a tuned-port thing having the wire by the heater box. In that case, yes, you should disconnect that wire since you don't have the 4-wire connector. My old IROC had the coil in cap and the 4-wire harness, but it was a carburated 305. All tuned port engines were 6 degrees btdc.
