Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Made it out, first time ever drag racing, and I LOVE IT! So much fun!!
I ran alot slower then I thought, although it was very hot out, and I am running alot of initial advance, which in the heat might have been causing some knock retard. I was running ok up until the 8th mile then it got slower (spending more time in the top end of the RPM) Oh well, at least I got me some baselines and had a GREAT time!

Pics :

Videos :

Me, racing :

Now I ran 16.14 @ 82.75MPH
To get to 66MPH (trap speed in thr 1/8 mile It took about 10seconds, which I have that video of me around 6 seconds to 60MPH.. so im thinking heat and timing retard would be my biggest issue..)
Time slip info :
First Run :

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

how old are the wires, plugs, ignition module, cap and rotor? those 5 things can make a 2 second difference on a stock L98 if they are old/crap and not working right

Sumptin's not right. I ran a 14.3 @ 96 stock on a full weight GTA 350.
What's your base timing set at?

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Agreed, a stock 350 TPI Formula should be in the 14s somewhere and trapping in the 90s if it's running properly.

Did you ever get that banana out of the tailpipe?

But seriously, as a starting point, I agree with the above question- what's your base timing at? 6* is stock (checked with timing wire unplugged to remove all computer-supplied timing). Most TPIs run best with that bumped up about 4* to 10* initial.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Took IGN module off the donar 350 I have, it was all greased and like NEW.. so I took mine off, full of green corrosion, burnt bottom, I greased up the one from other car, and took it out for a spin it is like 283739 times better above 3500rpm, it feels so fresh.. I wish I could hit the track again lol, feels so much better!

---

Its at 8* advance, at this time... i was hearing some detonation when its HOT tho, with my chip I was thinkin of setting it back to 6..

Its bolted to the distributer. Mounted just under the distributer cap. It uses the pickup coil in the distributer to switch the ignition control module off and one. It also supplies the ECM with an RPM reference signal in which to base fuel and timing needs from. Timing information is also sent from the ECM to the module to vary the engines ignition timing.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

I pulled valve cover off and four 081 heads!!! (granted they do have gold colour 1:6 rockers and red valve springs, maybe he did up the 081's for compression gain?) Could this possibly be a 305?! I gotta find block Code, I know on the 350 TPI I have in my unit (which will go in this winter if it is a 305 lol) Its on back tranmission flange on driverside.. but in the car a pipe and wire harness runs over it.. any other locations where is easily seeable?

It's really not ok, should be able to get 1.99 with stock suspension and regular radials.
My old 87 350 car started at 16.43 at 80 something first time I went to the track. Best I got out of it was a 14.2 at 94. All I did to it is basically start fixing the little things... like you found with the ignition module.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Ya, my 88 Formula 305TPI auto, 3.23gears, and totally bone stock was running 15.7 @ 86mph.
With 3.73 gears it ran a 15.2 @ 90.

Something is definately wrong with your car,
EDIT: Just read more of the thread.

Yes, alot of the later blocks have the last 3 digits of the casting number cast near the freeze plugs. Get a wire brush and brush the area. It is pretty easy to see. Should be 638 or 880 for a late model roller cam 350.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

I am in the same boat with my 91 350 T/A. I am not big into drag racing, but I was hoping for a 14 sec run at least.

Run 1
RT: 0.751
60ft: 2.359
1/8: 11.152 s
1/4: 17.265@80

Run 2
RT: 1.001
60ft: 2.39
1/8: 10.967 s
1/4: 17.114@78

Run 3
RT: 0.367
60ft: 2.312
1/8: 10.726 s
1/4: 16.708@79.8

Run 4
RT: -0.004
60ft: 2.338
1/8: 10.183 @72.38
1/4: 16.018@83.68

Run 5
RT: 0.031
60ft: 2.378
1/8: 10.279 @72.839
1/4: 15.963@86.686

I know the car needs a tune-up, but I have changed the ICM since with very little change in the way it runs. My biggest problem was that the car wouldn't shift at WOT - I hope to have time to fix this soon, then I might take it back to the track.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

wow car needs a tune up for sure! L98 should not be near 15's and any less than 93-94 mph!

60 foot should be in the 2.00 range, maybe even better on a sticky track and good tires.

i know i've been 1.89 on 2.77 gears but with 2800 stall on my street tires. 1.9's can be done on stock type street tires and stock stall converter

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Like I said I am sure the tranny problem is slowing it a lot too. And the exhaust doesn't look like its got that great of a route after the headers. Some of it may also be due to the altitude at the track (5320'). I've looked and it needs the cap/rotor/plugs/wires.

Suggestions on those items?

According to the prev owner it has "New Ford Racing 24# Injectors" and "High Flow Fuel Pump." Not real sure but the way it idles I think it may be running fairly rich too.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

well taht explains some of it...hot air and high altitude will make a L98 run 15's or so. new injectors without tuning will make it run rich. get your trans shifting right and tune it for those injectors and it will run like a L98 should at those altitudes. I didnt think new mexico was that high up there

Yeah, parts of NM are.

And speaking of "hot air", it has one of those cool looking filters that sits right on the front of the TPI.

those filters arent bad if you have a ram air hood to get some cold air to it. lol else make/buy a cold air setup to locate the filter to the fender

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Hey White Knight, what does your car have for suspension? I was comparing the video of your run to mine and it looks like you launch way harder.

http://video.ls1tech.com/video/f9833...18013d8cb0.htm

Take a look, my run is about a minute into the video.

I plan to make a CAI for car - when school and work allow...

10.72 in the 1/8 from a 350 TPI? My stock 1991 G20 van with its 210 HP TBI 350 and nothing more than 1.6:1 roller rockers, a high flow cat, and prom tuning ran 10.80s @ 65 mph.

This is my bone stock run the way I bought it. Left lane The right lane IIRC was a short wheelbase C1500 with a 350 TBI.

Stock suspension, but 3.73's prolly help my launch lol

I was shifting at 5500.. this prolly was hurting me, I got on it tonight and let it shift (4700) in D, and it pulls all the way to 4700, shifts and is right back into the meat. It would kinda labour to get 4500-5500, that and new IGN module and COOLER air I should be alot better.

i cant see video until I go home, at work now, Ill watch it when I get home For sure!

vin code dont mean crap on15+ year old cars. Mine says its a 305 TBI, automatic, 2.73 gears. But it has a 350TPI, 5sp, 3.23. I'm guessing 50%'ish of the cars on this board dont have the numbers matching block in it. And about 25'ish dont have the same displacement.

I would say defintely hurting on a stock TPI setup. My L98 car like to shift at 4800rpm, any more than that and you were really wasting time.

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Vin is F = 305
Emission Label = 5.7 L
Guy said it had 5.7 L in it...

I could ALMOST see block code (between frost plugs on side of block) Im going to put it on ramps tomorrow and get a good look.

Spare complete TPI motor I have is '638' (350)

(I bet now with new IGN module, cooler air, and shifting in the power band Ill be low side of 15's...)

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

i wouldnt shift any more than 4500rpms on a stock TPI L98! 5500 is WAYYY to high, but still it isnt gonna make you run as bad as your running currently.

my car unfortunately shifted at 4800-5000 by itself so my best time could have been abit better if it would have shifted at 4500.

1/8 mile 9.7 @ 73mph

Re: Help!! went to track with 350 TPI Formula..

Not really a buzz kill, for instance:

See block code

double check, can't be a 305 right?

sweat

triple check,f*ck.

flip the F*ck out!

Look at 350 on engine stand in corner

smile, tizzy over, pride recovered from supposed 350 runs..

BUT you need to beat my record of 15.6 at 85, in a 92 camaro, with an L03, an open element and a posi 2.73 but no other performance options/mods. you'll get it just keep finding the crap thats wrong untill finally the factory stuff working right becomes your restriction.
