Which cam for a stock 89 (MAF) L98?

It's a 100% stock 1989 (MAF) L98 with Jet Chip, Accel AFPR, Hooker 2055-1's, and 2.5" free flowing true dual exhaust with Random Technologies cats and an X-pipe... This is in a 1979 Camaro. The gears are 3.23's and I've got a 2000-2200 stall converter from Hughes Performance in it too.

The car must pass smog as this is a California car and I want it legal, so which cam can I use without having to use a programmer and still pass the sniffer while on the rollers (at 15 MPH and 25 MPH)?

Thanks guys!

BTW, I've done search after search but couldn't find what I was look'n for, hence the new thread.

PS: Please post links, specs and/or part numbers if possible. Thanks again!

Its worthless to put a camshaft in with the stock heads. All the good cams have lifts higher than .480 and the stock heads wont take more than that. Save your money and do the heads, cam, and intake manifold all at once.

i didnt realize it was the XFI.
but if you can't wait....

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku this one is pushing it.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku this one is almost the same as a LT1 cam. so you could just buy a used LT1 cam.

you'll need some comp cams pn#981 springs. he's just saying, if the lift of the cam is too high you'll need the springs to compisate. you would have to bore out the spring's seat to make do for the larger OD springs.

That second cam is the one I was looking at. Looks only slightly larger than stock but enough to make a noticeable difference. So you think it would work with my setup eh? Remember, I want to get as much out of this thing as possible without having to get into programming... I'm not at that point YET And still pass smog ofcourse.

Here's another question. I got a set of lightly used self aligning 1.6 x 3/8" Pro Magnums from my friend for $150, could I put these on with that cam? My thought is that aside from increasing the lift to .467/.482", which is a bit higher but still within the limits of the heads, it would also increase the speed at which the valves open causing it to act like a slightly larger cam but with equal torque. Would you agree?

Hey, I wouldn't need to modify anything in order to use the SA 1.6's would I?

So if I'm reading you right, the 981's (which I have a set of sitting in a box somewhere) are too big? What about the "Beehive" 981's?

Here's another related question... As for seat pressure, what kind of open/closed numbers should I be striving for?

Okay, time to go back to work. Hope to come back to a ton of reading

Take care guys!

- Joel

as far as 1.6rr iam not sure if its too much idk.
but i do know that the 981 spring fit right in your stock head with No modification. the seat pressure is close to stock so no shiming is necessary.

Re: Which cam for a stock 89 (MAF) L98?

I installed the 452/465 cam, first one in 3RD Gen Z's list, and my 89 passes smog in Ca without a problem. Woke up the car nicely. Despite Crane's word it won't cause the computer fits it did create some idle issues that still trouble me. Crane recommends an AFPR with it which I got but I still run the stock PSI and my plugs actually look a bit darker than what is optimum IMO. I raised the idle on the chip and closed the IAC counts by playing with the minimum air so that the count at idle is nearly zero. This is the only way the idle is workable for me. Someone may scoff at this approach to correct the problem but the car drives and runs decently every day and gets 14mpg in town with 3:73s. I'm going to spend some time early next year figuring the tune out better.

Out of curiosity, what's the rest of your combo look like? And it doesn't sound like you're running the stock chip.

I would rather use the 104224 cam, but I am affraid of having issues such as yours... I'm curious, are you using a stock converter too?

Re: Which cam for a stock 89 (MAF) L98?

Originally it did not have anything other than the stock convertor but the mid range definitely improved.
I now have a 2600 stall and 3:73. The chip is basically a stock AUJM with a little tweaking to the fans, idle speed, choke settings, and base idle timing. I'm still learning-don't be afraid of issues it's part of hot rodding. Learning to chip tune it takes a little money to set yourself up but no more than a good set of headers.
The rest of my combo is an Eldebrock large port base, AS&M runners, plenum ported to match the runners plus the other clean up stuff, cat back. Headers too if I ever get up the energy to fight/install them. I started chip tuning because tuning is part of any engine, carb or FI.

Good luck...GW
