hard starting

88 iroc 350 tpi.. my car is hard to start anytime.. i have to crank it for at least 30 seconds and sometimes twice... if i give it 1/4 pedal it starts better... my fuel pressure is fine, new fuel filter, new cts, new o2 sensor, tps set at .54, iac holds the idle perfectly at 650 once it is started.

it wouldnt bother me at all except that i have an auto starter which can not start my car....

I haven't tested the cold start valve or EGR but it acts the same way when warm. the only time it starts right away is after i have it running shut it off and restart immediately.. if i wait 5 mins it is a pain to start again...
Any suggestions?? and how do i test the EGR or cold start switch?

Thanks

Put your car in run, dont start it, just listen if your fuel pump comes on, oyu will hear a hi pitch wining if it does. if not your fuel puimp relay might be bad. My friend had this problem with his 85 TA TPi, his pump only came on when the engije is cranking. Also it coudl be poor spark or need a tune up. Does it bog down when you mash the gas? Also try to read your trouble codes if oyuhave any. I hope some of this helps, I cant offer any other souluions right now, tryign to concentrate but some ***** I hate keeps passing my house with his fart pipe lol.

no trouble codes... fuel pump comes on for about 2 secs... once started it runs great... no bogging.. lots of power... i just recently put all bosch platinum plugs in with accel 8mm wires and new cap and rotor(the problem was occuring before this)

I have no other problems except for emmisions and a small puff of blue (valve seals)

turn the key off and on a couple of times and then crank it to see if that changes anything
if so it could be the fuel pump check valve

done that... no change.

If i turn it over for 3 consecutive times it will start but if i just turn the key off and on a few tmes it does nothing.

I still don't understand that if i give it a litlle pedal it will start fine...

do you get a puff of black smoke?
If so you may have a leaky injector

Mine had the same problem. Got the puff of blue smoke too. I cannot guarantee the info, but I was told the valve seals were probably leaking oil into the cylinders and causing it (or at least contributing) to start harder. I'm actually replacing the motor, so it is of no concern for me now, but it may be something to look into.
