suggestions for my 383 build?

Ive decided I might as well get ahead and decide what I want to do with my next engine build.

-69' 4 bolt 350
-eagle 383 stroker kit
-patriot 195cc cyl heads 64cc
-holley stealth ram
-LT4 hot cam
-proform 1.6 roller rockers

I'm hoping I can use my existing 88 m.a.f. setup with some tunning?
I want to be able to run 87 octane as it WILL be a daily driver
I would hope to get somewhere in the 18-25mpg range
It will be going in my 2900 lb S-10 3.44 rear gears 295-50-16 700r4 stage 2 kit and either a 2000 or 2500 stall?
I would still like to keep some what of a tame street motor with a good sounding idle

If I keep my stock ported intake will it totally make it a dog past 4000 on a 383? I might hold off on the hsr in case the bbk comes out in time

as far as the hsr intake goes is there a catch 22? 310 bucks and bolt in seems too good to be true

can you guys recommend a cam for me? Ive looked at a bunch of posts and they all seem to be leaning to the comp xfi280?
im hoping for 400 or more crank h.p.

any help would be well appreciated

Re: suggestions for my 383 build?

sounds like a great driving combo... the hotcam is a small cam in a 383. it will idle alittle more aggressive than a stock bolt on L98 would but it will be fairly mild.

no worries tho it will stillll make good power. I've seen a combo like that put down over 360whp surprisingly. i'd expect 340whp well tuned with proper compression. thats around 400 crank if not a tad over. you can go slightly bigger. 280xfi is somewhat more aggressive tho. A inbetween cam would be the CC503 or 276hr as its commonly known. its a 224/230. great driveable cam for a 383. Comps 282HR, the 230/236 duration cam would be nice as well for abit more topend power with HSR to near 6000 rpms

keep compression around 10 to 1 and it will run great on pump gas and 87 octane with some conservative timing with mild cams like the hotcam. you'll need a 12 cc dish piston with that 64 cc chamber assuming zero deck block with standard .040" gasket to get a 10.2 to 1 compression or so

Stock HSR will work great for that motor, much better than any TPI. it should peak power at around 5200-5300 rpm with that hotcam i'd say. shift by 5500. BBK looks promising too, should support power to near 5500 from what i see/hear.

HSR is 310 for the manifold but you will need the 200 dollar fuel rail kit and then custom fuel lines which can be made for well under 100 bucks, its really easy to do. Buy 2 pairs of fittings, adapter fittings for the stock hardlines, and 6 feet of braided steel hose. cut it in half to 3 foot lengths and screw the fittings on, screw adapters on, its ready to go. So a complete HSR is more like 600 bucks. money well spent in my opinion, its the best bang for the buck intakes available for fuel injection setups period

2500 stall will be fine. it will have some torque to that motor thats for sure.

It will need tunning but wont be too hard to get that thing running with MAF. it will easily handle that combo.

Re: suggestions for my 383 build?

Why a '69 4-bolt? The LT4 hot cam isn't going to like the flat tappets. A factory roller block would be a better start, and a 2-bolt can be made stronger on the bottom end than a factory 4-bolt.

BTW - A carbed 355 can make 423 HP at the crank on pump gas and be very streetable. Your goals are not very high for a 383.

Re: suggestions for my 383 build?

I bought the engine off of my step dad's friend that came out of his oval track car. I know when it was in my step dads pickup with 40's and 3.73 (i know horrible) by the time it reached 5000 is would scream through holes that guys in 44's couldn't do I still haven't been able to go over and check the head castings yet but I had a guy come and look at for his 69 camaro resto and it was cast in the wrong factory. He was willing to give me 800 bucks for the block.

so you guys really recommend a roller block? I have an old 92 350tbi motor laying on the ground I pulled out of my grandpa's work truck that might still be usable?

what about mpg wise? gas here is always over a dollar a litre (3.80 a gallon and up) but Ill drive a gas sucking v8 over a 4 banger import any day

and as for 1/4 mile times? the s-10 do hook very well with trac bars and drag radials

thanks again guys

Re: suggestions for my 383 build?

i like roller cams over flat tappets anyday. they make more power and run smoother in motors. last longer too, no tappet wear.

I'd build the roller block if you have a roller block. use that hotcam or similar. it will run good in a 383. make somewhere around 340-350whp perhaps alittle more depending on compression/exhaust systems/tune. that will push a S10 deep into the 12's. should idle somewhat tame, and get decent mileage. you dont need a lot of power to push a light car/truck around. that 383 will have lots of torque with a smaller cam and HSR/BBK intake. it will drive around good. I can see near 20mpg highway easily if tuned well. Its all gonna be in the tune. My stock L98 got 23-24mpg highway and it wasnt tuned for highway mileage. Conservative timing and running on the lean side will help that yet still retain good power

Re: suggestions for my 383 build?

yes they will. mainly the small 1 1/2 tubes. you need atleast 1 5/8, preferably 1 3/4 for those 195 cc heads you plan to run and 383 inches. they put out alot of air, so run as much pipe as you can

If the camaro guy will give ya 800 bucks for the block, take it, and buy some more cool toys for the roller block.....

275cfm per runner so 2200cfm total?!

i just need the overall airflow to punch into my comp cams dyno and see what it shows
