The MAF's are capable of reading more than 255 gm/s. In fact at 4.71 VDC, they read 254 gm/s. They can send an output signal of over 5 VDC. You do the math.
The problem lies with the ECM, which can only accept a max. value of 255. Short of teaching an old ECM how to page or teaching a newer one to do MAF, both of which would require reprogramming the microcode, this limitation remains.
The practical solution would seem to be to fool the ECM into 'seeing' less airflow than actual. Which would also require lying about the injector flow rate and some other related factors.

There is a tool called translator from modern musclecars or ramchargers the device uses a lt1 maf and somehow fools the computer to read more air.BTW this is for a 3.8 turbo I feel sure that a device exists to do what you are looking for.

The one available for the TTA is allowing you to use a LS1 MAF because its larger. I still have to good old limitation, but its higher because the Turbo will suck a lot more air than a TPI will, or atleast that GM ever planned for one to.
WE don't fool the computer into thinking that its flowing more air, same amount, the translator just makes it so the TTA computer can read an LS1 signal. The larger less restrictive intak you have the less work the turbo has to do to spool up. This means more power sooner and a lot better times.

If the MAF is capable of a 10volt or higher signal, what about putting a voltage divider between the MAF and ECM, so the ECM only sees half the actual MAF voltage, then programming the ECM to supply more fuel appropriate to the fact that it's only seeing half the voltage? I'm thinking something similar to what's done with the Speed Density ECMs when using a 2bar MAP for boosted applications. You lose some resolution, but the end result is still better for heavily modified applications.

I run the MAF Translaotr on my 89 TTA with a 3 inch LT1 MAF .....this is for s stock setup, if i would get the MAF extender chip for my car it would read over 255 in the vicinity of 512-520 or so....
But as was stated earlier, u will lose resolution when u do this, they ahve to break it down to fit in the format that the formerly 255 max code was......twice as much in one space and the resolution does go down, but not using this myself i cannot say
Others using this system swear by it and i may get one to find out for myself by the way the MAf Translator will work on TPI cars os u can ditch the crappy original mafs
later
