Do you need a vehicle speed sensor (VSS)????

I originally posted this in General Tech, but I thought it would be better over here. Anyways, after I did my TPI swap, I forgot about the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), and I haven't done anything about it until today. I finally ordered one. I was just wondering if not having it hurt my performance. Will I notice any changes in performance, gas mileage, and/or driveability when I install it? Why exactly is it important? Will something like this put me into the 13s? I ran a 14.1 best. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

X,

The VSS is used to control the TCC lockup, electric fan operation, and the speed limiter programming.

Thanks for the reply. I have heard though that the car runs much better with a VSS. Any truth to this? Thanks.

Yes there is. My speedo cable broke and my VSS wasnt working because of it. You should be throwing a code for it i think. Im not sure about performance, but i got alot worse gas mileage without the torque converter lockin up

SO what if you have a manual tranny?? Would it hurt it? I have been doing alot of searches on this topic and I can't find one that answers all of my questions. But it has been asked so much I don't want to start another thread. So if I cut the wire, am I going to have any problems???

It does throw a code but some people put it on a switch so when they flip it the code comes on and they go faster, and when they are done speeding they flip it again and a minute later the SES light goes off. If i remeber correctly it the #10 wire going into the prom...

why wouldnt the speedo work in a manual, its cable driven?

i was figuring VSS, as in later models with no speedo cable. but then again, if the speedo works, the speedo cable works, therefore the VSS on the speedometer works. speedometer cant work and VSS not work unless you cut the wire for on the back of the cluster for some strange reason.
