Many different opinions on this.

Originally, the 5.7 was not available with a five speed because the motor could put out more torque than the tranny was rated for. Then, in 87 or 88, they came out with the World Class 5 speed, and it was mean enough to deal the the 5.7. Of course, later, they came out with the 6 speed, and that was very nice with the big V-8.

However, there have been numerous people on the boards here that have used the whimpy 5 speed with the 5.7, and had good results, others go thru them like underwear. It all depends on how you drive, and how well maintained the tranny was.

Poke and hope..... If you are thinking of buying a tranny, get the WC 5 spd, or go for the T-56, six spd. Either way, you should be good to go.

Good luck!

would the T-56 bolt up to an 88 T/A's crossmember and fit through the shifter column?

No, you will have to make modifications to make the T-56 work. Their is a tech article on how to do it. I have heard it's well worth it though.

what kind of 6 speed transmission can you buy NEW that is compatable with the 5.7L engine? will it bolt up nicely? or do you have to screw around with it to get it on? i got a 5.7L TPI and i was thinking about changeing it to standard. i have read the tech articles on this and i dont want to get some old junky transmission from a junk yard. i wana know if there are any aftermarket transmissions for the 5.7L TPI. also, will switching my 350 to a carb make it easyer on the tranny? please reply

IMHO i would set it up for a t-5,no starter, bellhousing, slave cylinder or speedo problems(vss)i would order a tremec 5 speed it's a bolt in application.and will handle more tq than the t56(in TKO form).i've been running my t-5 for a while with no problems just don't launch in first gear or power shift and it will last

To tell you the truth the T-5 will not handle a 350 because they are rated at 300 ft/lb. I would say if you are going to do it go for the T-56 from a 93 to 97 Z or TA. They will cost you from $700-1500 depending on where you get it. You will need to make sure you get everything with that like peddles bell housing etc... You will also need a new cross member from www.skulte.com for around $150 or so cant remember off hand. Also if your car was not made for a manual you will have to make a hole for the cluth peddle. I am going to switch out my T-5 because I am afraid that I will blow it up with the Ram Jet 350 that is going in soon.
