Air Box Air Deflectors
I just bought an 89 Iroc I have been doing a lot of maintenance on it and when I took off the plastic intake and filters I found these flaps that you can unbolt that redirect the air entering the air box. I took them off to allow more air to flow but what is the point of these flaps? Do they do any good?

they also make the car quieter, for example, if u put a k&n on it or gut the airbox completely, you will notice it sounds like it is sucking air.

As fastcamaro87 said, they are basic used as silencers. Not so much for water and stuff...that's what that plastic piece/baffle is for underneath the airbox.
Just take the fins out, and toss them.

Absolutely worthless pieces of plasitc. Hacksaw off the bottom of the airboxes (Right above the vents) and slap some reuseable filters (K&N or Holley) in there so you can clean them when they get dirty. Andris Skulte has a ram air design that you can use to build your own ram air for your car. Its in the Tech Section I believe, or find it on his site www.skulte.com.
