Updated PROM for 86?

I've heard of an updated PROM for the 86TPI. Is there such a thing? Does anyone have any more info on this?

What a lot of guys do with 86-88 MAFs is convert to 1989 Memcals and run the ARAP.BIN, which is one of the best stock BINs for a MAF car.

The 89s don't use the cold start injector, so you just block it off or disable it.

Some 86s came with a bugged prom that caused some driveability problems. If the chip is the original chip, my 86 had the original chip, then it might be worth the $40 to get a revised chip from your local GM dealer. I'd go with the 1988 chip that best matches your car if it were me - there is a listing on this site under FAQ. Vader did an article on the bugged chip,, I'll get the link to the site for you tonight if no one else knows where it's at and posts it.

So I could just walk into the dealership and ask for the 88 PROM plug it in and go or would it require more adjustment than that?

For an 86 IROC the part number is 1228291...at least that is what I got...but you will be much happier with an ARAP based chip as explained above. I have one, and switch back to my stock prom to do some NOS runs, and boy was the stock prom a dog compared to my ARAP.

Yes the 88 305 chip will work in the 86 305 computer and you’ll get the benefit of 2 more years of GM engineers working on driveability issues. While the computers are the same for 86 – 89, in 89 the cold start injector was dropped. Also VATS (vehicle anti theft system) was introduced as standard equipment on the 89 Camaros and Firebirds and an option on Firebirds in 1988. If not for VATS, the 89 chip could have been interchangeable just by unhooking the cold start injector. However, since the 89 Camaros (and some 88 Firebirds) do have VATS and a non VATS car will not crank with a VATS chip, the 88 is the latest plug and play chip for your 86 computer.

The following for automatic 305 TPI Camaros was copied directly out of the FAQ section on this site.

88 5.0-F A/Trans(M39) Fed, 2.73(GU2) 16082173 2174AKFM
88 5.0-F A/Trans(M39) Fed, 3.23(GU5) 16082183 2184AKFP

Unless you can find (hire) someone to “burn” you a ARAP bin based chip for your 86 305,, with at least the injector constant changed (since the ARAP was based on a 350 calibration) and disabled VATS,,, you’ll have to get your own equipment to “burn” your chip to use that bin. However, I would suggest you get your own equipment over buying an off-the-shelf or “custom” chip,, in case the GM chip just won’t cut it for you.

Thanks for the info. I'll most likely go with the 88 chip. It seems to be realitivly inexpensive for the benefits.
