13.5 with stock tpi and heads

Here is the plan with my 89 L98 formula. I am going to do the engine later, when I can do it right. In the meantime I want to run 13.5. Here is the plan - port/gasket match stock intake, valve job/pocket port stock heads/screw in studs&springs to use 1.6rr's I already have, and a mild cam. I have slp exhaust(headers back) already, slp cold air, and rebuilt tranny with transgo and 2700 vigilante TC. Just bought bfg drag radials and will get suspension this winter. Paint will take up the funds next year, I just want to run decent until I can concentrate on the engine. Now that you have the foundation, who is running mid 13's on stock heads/intake. I'd like to hit 102-104mph.

This winter, along with the suspension, I'm also replacing the fuel pump, injectors, and water pump - I already have full MSD ignition also. I'll probably attempt to learn how to burn my own chip too.

It's all in the 60'. With a good converter, rear suspension and sticky tires, you should have NO problem running 13.5 or better on that combo. I have run 13.94@96.6 with a handful of mods: ported plenum, tubular LCA's & panhard, cheap B&M converter (~1800 foot stall), Nitto DR's, Hypertech chip, airfoil and SLP 2OTL muffler/tailpipes. This was with stock motor, exhaust back to the muffler, '87 TPI airbox etc. I cut a 1.95 60' (best of 1.89) and scored a good ET. I am hoping for a 13.6@100 with headers, high flow cat, 3" intermediate pipe and 1.6 rockers. Time will tell.

I agree, 13.5 should be possible. I ran 13.81@98.96mph with a 1.96 60ft time. That was a stock L98, ported intake, plenum, manifold, cold air and some good suspension mods. Track was sea level with good spring-time air.

My hardest part is getting a good launch. With a 1.988 60' time I was able to pull off a 14.7 and a 14.8, and that was with very little slip.

If you can pull of a run with little wheel slip, a 13.5 should be easily attainable with the mods you listed above.

hmm...guess I shouldn't have complained.

I ran 14.20s at 97.55 cutting a 2.1 60 foot. I have SLP exhaust, no cat. That's all. With 148,000 miles. I don't see how hitting 13.5s without touching heads should be a problem. I believe someone said it above... it's all about traction. An E.T. is traction.

Thanks for the responses guys. With the vigilante, bfg drag radials I just bought, and LCA/brackets I will do this fall I should have a pretty good 60'. I just bought a tpi base so I can get to porting soon also !! Just need to pick out a nice mild cam now.

Good 60 ft's is where its at.My Z 60 ft's awful on street tires 2.16 best, babying it for 30 or so ft and it shows in the ET.Now my AMX has less HP then the Z,stock 390 long block with the usual boltons for a carbed car ,(stock cam). With Sportsman Pro's its runs 12.94@102 on a 1.83 60 ft.It MPH's low cause it basically runs outa cam LOL.But you see what i mean. It screams the first half track, and that makes up for its lack of high end HP.
