CHANGED EGR, STILL NEED HELP
Ok everyone...I just finally finished changing the EGR valve today on my TPI motor. One of problems as i can see it still exists so far-that is, that on a totally cold startup, the engine likes to stall and idle at a very low rpm....the alternator voltage goes down when this happens. It happens in park and in drive, at a stop sign or light. It just happend to me tonight, a few hours after i got done changeing the valve. Any suggestions? Other than that, the car, SO FAR seems to be running stronger again. I really would like this car to run normally, as i am tired and embarassed having to hold one foot on the slightly on the gas and the ohter on the brake when i am stopped and the enigne is cold to keep the car running. Thanks again.

"...and the pesants rejoyce..." No, i have not checked either, since I do not know the proceedure, and am not sure if i have the tools to do such a thing. If i could be told how to do those things, that might help. Thanks for the response.

In case none of that works, what else should i start to look at? Injectors? Fuel pump?

I am having the same problems as you. I had a code 32 and plan to replace the EGR. After reading your posts, I think it might be something else. My problems aren't as severe as what you describe but I have the rough idle in drive. I set my TPS to specs. I still think my leaking injectors are the problem. Never rule out the fuel pump. They tend to cause alot of things to go wrong. I am going to replace mine soon just to be sure. It has over 113k on the pump. Let me know what you find out.

IROC315....
You bring up some very interesting and noted points. As soon as i start getting paychecks again, i can throw some more money and time at this, and will keep posting as to what i find. So far, the car has been acting "better" than it was, but the problem now seems to be intermittent....doesnt happen nearly as often as it did before i changed the EGR, but it still does it...sometimes. But what you said makes alot of sense...i was guessing the injectors and pump woould be next...after i rule out the tps and such.

Your IAC valve is maybe going bye-bye (or it's not plugged in correctly). It controls idle speed under the ECM's watchful eye. If it's shot you will have a constant (usually low) idle speed. No big deal when the engine's all warmed up but when it's cold the thing will stumble around at ~350 RPM and try to stall at every opportunity.

I just recently fixed my problem with low idle (at or less than 500rpms when stopped) and false codes for EGR and MAF sensor, I believe codes 32,33,34 and a couple others. I have an 86 IROC 305 TPI auto and I believe you may have the same problem I did with the stock PROM chip. I went to the dealer last friday and ordered the updated one for my car. RUNS SO MUCH BETTER! It also increased the speed at which the torque converter locks up too! You may be experiencing bad driving conditions around 20 to 30 mph, Updated PROM also fixed this!! Just something to look into, I got my EGR replaced for 400 bucks and I got a dented intake runner in the process and the damn light still came on for the same freakin code!!! Just something to think about! for 60 bucks cant hurt any!! best of luck man!

Hey guys...
Thanks for the responses and ideas. Much appreiciated
I would suspect the IAC at first also....anyone know how much a new one goes for? I could do it myself. But thats what i would tend to think at first...because it just happend today again...started the car, smelled a "rich" burning comming out of exahust, and the idle was extreemly low...stalled a coupel times. this was on warm startup. The cold was worse in the morning-stalled about 4-5 times. I hate having to hold my foot on the gas and the other on the brake to keep it from stalling.
About the PROM chip....its $60.00 for the updated one, BIMMA? I would NEVER suspect that being the problem...but I will definetly have to get that then...start eliminating problems one by one...makes life easier than taking it somewhere to change/fix things and not have a quality job done. i cant believe you spent $400 bucks on an EGR but i kinda can....i spent $105 on parts, and wrestled with it myself..but i got it done alone, and it works. It helped things a bit, but not everything. But thanks for the info, and I will do that...i hope something will fix it soon...kinda embarassing when you have a loud @$$ exhaust like mine, and you are pulling into pep boys and all the car guys are outside talkin, and you stall your car in front of them...not good

One thing....when you replaced your EGR, did you clean out all the passages in the intake, plenum and runners? If not, your egr could still be plugged, giving the code.
I was getting the code for a while, and cleaned out the passages and it went away. I took the plenum off, cleaned out all the passages, and sprayed lots of carb cleaner down the runner EGR passages (small tubes). Using GM top engine cleaner in these areas also works good.

Unfortunetly, I did not try that...I didnt have the $$ to actually go and get cleaner...because I spent it all on the parts to change the EGR. Being between jobs also sucks. But, I dont think that would cause my RPM's to fluctuate so much and for my car to stall...
