What is the best heads?
I have a 85 Iroc. I am pulling the 305 and putting in a 350 under the stock TPI unit. I will be using the Voodoo 256/262 213/219 with .454/.468 lift on 112 lsa. I am using a Hypertec thermomaster chip for a 85 vette. I have a 2400 hole shot converter with 3.23 gears with a powertrax unit. I have a AFPR and dont know what size injectors to get or brand.
What is the best heads to go with all this that has the heat crossover for me to use my stock EGR? I am wanting my compression to be 9.5 - 10.0 to 1.
I can spend around $800 -$1200. I still have to get my short block too, but i have Arounf $1000.00 for that as well. Thanks for any help.

Re: What is the best heads?
stock tpi heads will be good enough with the stick you are puttin in that motor
that stall is not nessesary with that stick
why are you getting that stick
fudge that weak stick
stick means cam
no no no
use the 305 heads
get the seats cut for 194's
have someone hog the bowls or diy
if you allready have that stick get some 1.6 rockers
have the machine shop make sure you will have enough clearance or diy
you will have about 10.4 with flattops
I run this setup and 93 octane and a great ign system is all you need
I cannot keep the wheels from spinning w/2.77s

If you plan on sticking with TPI for the long haul, I think I'd go with vortecs and a vortec base. You should be able to get both for about $1,000.

Re: What is the best heads?
I have that exact cam and it works well with 70 cc Edelbrock aluminum heads and SLP runners... my setup is non-emissions however. You would need the 64cc heads to get to the compression you want.

Re: What is the best heads?
what would you need to spend money on vortecs with that cam
this is not just directed at you but so many people spend unnessesary money because of names like supercompressionhorsepowertorquerollervortecvodoohyperchip
I have stock heads
stock intake runners tb
stock crank rods
you know what
send the vortec boys over here with a naturally asperated motor
after the race we will compare the amount of money invested
you just spent 3 times what I did to check out my taillights w/277s
I am about on the line of not helping anymore because of the people who are bolting names on there ride instead of enginering
it all has to work together in order make the power
my chip cost me 50 bucks
I have 200 in my heads
I have whatever the gaskets cost in the intake
I guess I have to limit myself to the threads I reply to

Re: What is the best heads?
I am using that cam because this is my daily driver. I dont need to have 400 hp. I know I dont need the 2400 stall but I wanted it. So you are saying that my stock heads with a port job will out flow a set of Vortecs or Edelbrocks Performers heads? I already have my 1.5 rocker arms as well. I dont want to buy everything needed to program my own chips so I got the Hypertec so I could run a 350 instead of my 305. That is why I went with the cam I got. I just wanted to know what heads were the best with heat crossovers.

Re: What is the best heads?
well you'll make the MOST power out of that setup with some good flowing 175-180 cc heads like trickflow or AFR but i wouldnt justify spending that kinda money on those heads for that cam and compression
But i agree with Jamon8
You'll make good power with mild ported stock L98 083 heads or 305 081 heads that are cut for 1.94 valves. Just keep compression to around 9.5 to 1 with both heads. 350 heads are 64cc so you may get away with a large cc flattop. 305 heads are 58cc so you may need a slight dished piston to keep compression down
I ran 12.90's with stock L98 heads, stock L98 cam. Mild port job on the heads would yeild me another 20 hp i bet easily and go 12.80's maybe 12.70's
I think your setup will be fine with a stock style head with a port job/valve job and setup to handle the cam lift with 1.6 rockers. I'd have the heads ported and flowed to see how the flow around .500" and run that cam with 1.6 rockers to boost lift up near there. It should like it. heads will need screw in studs and guide boss cutdown work.
With all that invested into the heads, you could get a set of vortecs but need a vortec TPI base. That adds to the cost but highflow TPI helps power too
Either way you go you'll like it

Re: What is the best heads?
Does the L98 heads have the heat crossover for the EGR? Where would I get a new set of these? Is the cam I picked better than the L98? I will also look into the Trick Flows. Thanks for the info. Sounds like I should be able to get into the 13's pretty easy.

Re: What is the best heads?
I have the 250 Voodoo but was going to send it back to Jegs for the 256 when I get home in 5 weeks from Iraq. I will talk to my wife and see what she thinks about me giving the 250 to my son and then I will just buy yours. I plane on giving my son the 305 out of my 85 Iroc for his first engine build. Then I will try to find him something like a 78 Nova. Thanks.

Re: What is the best heads?
sorry about the rant
I just dont want you to spend money in the wrong places
tpi heads will work fine with that cam
porting is actually easy
start with the upper pleneum then the runners, intake, and by the time you get to the heads you will be good enough to get the job done
unless you dont trust your hands
in that case spend some money
upgrade the ign system, headers, dont buy the stall,
SUBFRAME CONNECTORS
these are all just suggestions
do whatever floats your boat
you just need to learn who to listen to and who just has way to much money for thier own good

Re: What is the best heads?
lol yep late nights over here
Anyway that cam is a nice step up over stock. Its bigger than the L98 in duration and lift. STill a nice streetable cam tho that should give you a solid 10-15hp over stock
where to get new L98 heads? i'm not sure but you can buy them used off of L98s in the classifieds for not too much money. 100-150 bucks is about right plus shipping
yes they have the EGR crossover. 305 heads are just about the same except for chamber size and valve size. You can get them setup with 1.94/1.50 valves and be just like an L98 but with abit more compression
And i think the converter is a great mod. Even on my stock L98 i ran a 2800 stall and picked up ALOT of performance with that single mod. Got the car off the line in a heartbeat. 2400 would be a nice match for that setup for a street car/daily driver.. Since you already have it, use it.

Re: What is the best heads?
I picked up 3 tenths in the eighth mile from a converter with 2400 stall. Its a blast to drive and if you are rolling along slow enough for the converter to flash, it obliterates the tires. Comes out of the hole much harder off the footbrake. Don't go too big or you will hate it on the street.

Re: What is the best heads?
Yeah. I ran a Vega atall in my 69 Nova I had a while back. It stalled at 3000 and was a kick to drive. One of the reasons I have been buying everything is because once I get back to the states I wont have a lot of time for my swap over. So I am getting all my parts together now. I think I may get the Trick Flow heads. Besides I may get a wild hair up my butt one day and go with a bigger cam and learn how to burn my own chips. AND yes sub frame connectors are a definite. Thanks for the help.
