Rebuild or crate engine
I have a 89 iroc with the 350 tpi that has lots of miles. I would like around 350 horsepower. just wondering what would be the best way to go. A crate engine rebuild current engine. Is there crate engines that you can use the current tpi setup computer. or do you have to get different setup. reprogram computer. If crate engine is the way to gowhere is the best place to go to get one.

Re: Rebuild or crate engine
i guess what you have to ask yourself is what you want out of your car. I mean my car is a stock 305 TPI and i can burn the tires off all day but ive built carborator motors all day long , my uncles drag race old chevy novas and my opinion is that if you can outrun that with a fuel injected motor thats respect. My uncles can kiss my ***. HAHA I hope you like that aaron!

Crate if you have $
Rebuild if you have reliable machinist in town
Just remember if its your daily driver, you'll have to send your motor out, and that could take time.

Re: Rebuild or crate engine
I've only rebuilt one engine and it wasn't for my GTA, but being older and wiser now I wish that I would've just bought a long block from a supplier. Summit has ZZ4 Longblocks for $2000.oo
Around here you can get a longblock for about $1200-1400 with your core exchanged from Piston Ring (a parts store up here) and it comes with a warranty of some sort...... 20,000-30,000 Km???
The HP #'s you want depends on the cam and heads that you run and you can throw any number of cam/head variations that you want on a new longblock.
I nickeled and dimed myself to death with my first rebuild (around $3000.oo) and won't do it again because the end result wasn't worth it...

No one makes a good crate long block with everything you need unless you spend upwards of $5k.

Re: Rebuild or crate engine
A few years ago I debated whether to have my 5.0 liter rebuilt locally or get a crate engine. I decided to get a replacement long block engine from GM and install a cam, headers, exhaust, etc. If you stay with the same engine you get a three year warranty from GM. In your case you could get the same short block or a 383 stroker and get better heads, a cam, headers, exhaust system, upgrade your intake system with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, better fuel injectors, better intake manifold, bigger runners, port the plenum, K&N air filter, custom PROM chip and other upgrades. You may get between 300 and 350 hp.

um what are you talking about????
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...1&autoview=sku
theres a nice mild GM longblock for 2700 maybe 3000 after shipping and delivery and with headers, full exhaust and a few bolt on like an underdrive set 350hp would be a pretty easy mark to hit if you ask me

Re: Rebuild or crate engine
I think what Dyno Don means is that everyone has different goals .......
and "everything you need" may mean Forged internals...Crank, rods, pistons etc What length of Rod? What size piston? What stroke length?......
It's all so variable and every person out there has their own recipe.... It all depends what you want out of your car/engine combo
I still think that 350 Hp is do-able with a run of the mill longblock and the right add-ons to compliment it. (Heads,Cam,Intake,Exhaust)
You can try to put together your own shortblock, but if you've never done it before you risk screwing it up...... and experience has shown me that most engine shops will bend you over to put one together for you

Re: Rebuild or crate engine
Yes if your going to shoot the moon for power then things get pricey very quickly. I try not to think about how much money i've already spent on the 408 I'm building. But i put together the motor in my car for about 2700 bucks. And it makes the kind of power irocman79 is talking about. I has lucky enough to have a good local machine shop that has reasonable priced shortblocks and prices competative with summit to do it tho. So in the end it really depends on what you want to do, your skill level and what kind of help you can get.

I agree with Dyno Don. With a crate motor there is almost always a compromise to be made. When you build the motor yourself you can put the parts in it that you want.
