AFR Head opinions...
I'm planning on getting new heads, AFR's 180 Eliminators to be exact. I'd like to get some opinions if I could though.......
I plan on driving my car 80% street...... 20% strip which is where my setup is going as far as I have planned it, see signature. (I was gonna use the 58 cc Cambered World SR Torquers but don't wanna do another top end next year...cause I'm tired of doing things twice)
Is the 180 Eliminator too small if I plan on using a power adder(Supercharger/ Nitrous) at a later date......? Or a larger displacement 383 within 5 years.
I was thinking the LPE 211/219 (.530/.560") is good to about 5500 RPM which should work well with the Stealth Ram and the AFR180.
Would the 195's be too big for a 350 with my LPE cam, a HSR & no tq converter???

Re: AFR Head opinions...
As we talked before, I dont think you can go wrong with either head. For a 383 down the road or a blower, i'd go 195 cc head tho but with a bit bigger cam than the 211 cam on that bigger motor.
For a nitrous car, either one will work.
For best results currently with that car, that cam you plan to run, and stock tq converter, the 180's will be the best choice. It will keep a very strong low end torque curve and make that motor torquey in the low rpms that are required with stock stall speeds. I'd highly recommend a converter anyway since it makes the car soo much more fun to drive...even a stock L98 is a blast with 2800 stall. But i think you can get away without one for now.
But the nice thing about the 195cc heads is the port design allows for good flow velocity so you will still have some low end power to run, just not as much as the 180 cc heads
For a 383 with same cam, the 180's will still be a good choice. It will be torquey
Loads of midrange with a hp peak probly no higher than 5400rpms with that cam. Fun street car. Mild cam doesnt need huge heads.
Bigger cam to support power to 5800-6000 or so will love the bigger 195 cc heads. Over 5500 rpms i'd go 195 cc heads all day long.
Its gonna be up to you how wild you want to go down the road. A pretty hot 383 will need 195's to make best power but a medium build 383 can get by with 180 heads. its all in how you cam it, or how much your gonna spray or if your gonna boost it. Loads of spray will like 195cc heads same with the blower

I would vote for the 195cc heads especially with your future mods in mind. Here in SoCal almost all the modded cars are running 195 to 200cc heads. We have Trickflow, Dart and AFR. They all run good.

Go with the 195's.
I have them on my 383.
If you EVER decide to something a little more radical, the 195's will be a much better choice.

Re: AFR Head opinions...
Thanks Orr89RocZ for all your help/opinions.... I posted this question but didn't really get any responses so I thought I would PM you considering your experience with setups
Considering the direction that I'm going I think that I'll be ordering the AFR Eliminator 180's!!!!! I think that if I'm really disapointed with the way everything feels after this topend rebuild I'll just add juice
I know that the HSR will lose a little lower end power/torque so the converter sounds like a decent idea ( I would love to do a converter but don't wanna pull that end apart right now), but if/when I eventually go to a 383 the extra cubes and smaller port will make up the difference as far as I see it. I love the feeling of torque so that's all good. Like you said a fun street car......
Who knows maybe I'll be so impressed with the AFR 180's/HSR/LPE/350cu that I won't want to do a 383 (
),but I doubt it

Re: AFR Head opinions...
if you go to google and search under "afr 195 383" it brings up articles about the heads from afr.. on a 383 with 10:1 cr, they installed a vortec supercharger and it made like 760hp at 7psi... crazy.. im actually about to order some 195's myself.. ive only heard good things about them.. in my opinion if i was thinking about doing something bigger, i would get the 195. that way i wouldnt have to buy it later. And we all know that after about a week of driving the new engine, it starts to feel like a turd

Wow..... I was away from the computer awhile. I started to post after seeing Orr89RocZ reply and had to walk away from the computer because of my sick kids.... by the time I finished my post there was 2 more replies.......
Man the 195's have a strong following!!!!!! Decisions decisions.....
How sluggish do you think a 350 would be with a stock converter/Hsr/LPE and 195's? I would hate to spend all the $ and do all the work and be disappointed
By the way, LB9GTA we should hook up this summer.....

Re: AFR Head opinions...
Nice thing about the AFR 180s is that it matches the 195cc flow numbers from .200 to .400 and only after that is the 195 taking over. 14 more cfm at .500 lift and thats where the 195's come in with big lift cams that want RPMS.
same flow numbers up to .400" in a smaller port will yield great cylinder filling and LOADS of low and midrange power. Its gonna make some strong torque numbers
I know magazine articles arent the best, but chevy high performance/popular hotrodding had a 406 build that made 490hp and 525lbft torque using AFR 180 heads although the competition port version which adds close to 10cfm more flow at peak. Probly worth 10-15hp max over 180's. It was a mild 9.5 to 1 compression motor using 87 octane gas and a mild flat tappet cam tho
BUT you also cant go wrong with the 195's. may be a tad sluggish on the low end, but driveable with that cam and stock converter
Like i said best bet for bigger motor or blown setup is 195cc heads. If its a bigger motor with mild cam, 180's will work just fine. depends on your hp goals. Even a blown setup tho, you can make SICK power with 180's. there are guys in the 11's and 10's on stock heads running turbo setups so jsut imagine a good set of 180's or 195's. BOth will make numbers!!
