Some Heads

My girlfriends dad has got some heads lying around from a 350 he had pulled out of a blazer. The heads are IRON not alumn. Would these heads do me any good on my 305tpi car (install a cam as well).

no because you have 58cc chambers where the 350 has anywhere from 64 to 76...you are not saying what # those heads are, if they are 882's they are 76cc smoger...they suck...I have those...they suck...but anyway, you cr would go down dramatically, thus you would loose hp, even with any flowing increase...I heard that the sportsman SR torquer heads are made for 305 and works good....or you could have those heads machine to come out to 58cc, but then, I'm not sure if for the amount of work there is to change heads and have them machine that the performance will justifies the headecks...my theory on heads is go aftermarket to get the most increase and do it once.....

Actually the iron TPI heads are 64cc, but if the heads from the 'blazer' are 64cc you probably will still lose power because the TPI heads are actually one of the best stock iron heads (besides vortec which soean't fit anyway)

Even if they have 2.02/1.60 valves the TPI heads stock to stock are better. Now if they are aftermarket iron or are fully ported/worked stockers the story's different.

In short if u want the best cast iron head, buy some Dart Iron eagles. Please click the link below to see why i say World sucks. Im now on a mission to inform everyone on the Thirdgen.org TPI board that World heads suck. https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/002513.html

I would like to mention there are many points to consider when selecting cylinder heads. You CAN NOT take one measurement, flow, whatever and take that as bible. Unless you have many years of cylinder head porting WITH use of a flow bench access (and you know how to use it correctly), you should be selective in your comments.

As I recall the WorldProducts heads have been around for a while. But they are inexpensive and they WILL AND DO outflow stock heads. So for the enthusiast who wishes to replace a tired set of 305 heads, these are a good place to start.

I would agree that if you are after some higher power on a large cube engine, then you might want to broaden your choices for cylinder heads.

With any cylinder head, if it comes without any porting or cleanup, there can be lots of casting flash and core shift. I recall a set of iron eagles that I was not too impressed with.

All in all, make sure to consider all items and cost. I selected Edelbrocks for my engine (very nice pieces). Above and beyond the cost of the heads I needed rather pricey head gaskets, hardened push rods and special head bolts (requires a washer). Heck new head bolts are always a good idea.

When selecting a head, I would look for the smallest intake CC volume and the highest flow. The smaller the CC, usually the higher the velocity. Make sure to look for high flow that complements the lift of your cam (no sense buying a head that flows well at 0.600" lift if your cam is only 0.454").

Mark.

the cam i chose is relatively mild .460 lift.(daily driver) the only other mods planned r headers. intake is bone stock besides cold air intake and ported plennum.so i figure heads with large intake runners will do me no good.my goal is to make 300hp from my L98.should i just leave the stock heads on it.(rebuilt 14months ago) and get the ponies elsewhere.?.SLP runers, ignition, pullies,

The s/r is just short for 'stock replacement'

doesn't inspire thoughts of horsepower building....

Now trick flows $850 tag is sounding good to me and they're good to .510 lift although i'm thinking the extra cash for the bigger valves might be a better investment.

I'm in te middle of a buildup from hell (all I have is the short block dissasembled, valve covers, and a timing chain cover!)

I have to find a way to get that **** finished cheap and quick and so far the parts that seem to really be laying the beatin into me is finding a serpentine setup from the junkyard.

For a 305 why not get a pair of 350 heads from a L98 and port and polish the heads (int.and exh.) and a 3 angle valve job. That would give you more than enough flow at a cheep price.

Actually for a 305, get the LB9 heads, they have a 59cc chamber and wont dump the compression of the 305 in the toilet.

The trick flows 23 degree can be had at... http://www.summitracing.com

I swear these companies should give me a discount. I like summit for some things though, jegs for few, and the junkyard for most.....

I just put on WP S/R 305 Torquers and must say was very impressed with the improvement. $700 for new heads, higher lift ability, and 30 HP... how can you complain?
