I imagine if you got the right heads, intake & exhaust combo, you could run low 14's high 13's if not a little better. Personally I would go with a nice cam because that is te=he easiest way to get gobs of HP

I guess it would really depend on the intake/head/exhaust. But if you started to get into a Miniram, Superram, and AFRs; you'd be kind of wasting your money because you'd definitely not be getting the FULL potential with that setup and have a "mis-matched" setup.

Frankly, the cam would be the cheapest of the bunch to replace and it would be silly not to replace it if you were going through all the other work and bother.

Conversely, you should look into eprom burning. On my "basically stock" SD L98 I am into the high 13s. With proper eprom tuning, you can get some significant improvements. And learning to burn an eprom on a "basically stock engine" is the best place to start IMO. You ALWAYS have the stock eprom to revert to if you screw something up.

PROM burning will be the next mod, i understand the facts behind it.

i've done some mods to improve engine breathing on the induction and exhaust side, like headers (still on the box though), 3" cat back, air foil and ported plenum. along with ome mods like SFC(dyi ones) and redusing weight by 100lbs.

i think if mods are done little by little all areas the final result will be more in balance. i'd be really happy if GTA could run 13.99 good day. that would be enough (at least for a moment)

contrary opinion about stock cam. its not that poor. for example compared to for ex. L99 engine (baby LT1) produces 200 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 240 lb.-ft. torque at 2400 rpm. and its cam adv. duration is less than 200 degrees on the intake side, right? to put it another way, same specs in 5.7 liters engine means 265hp at 5000rpm and 318 lb.-ft. tq at 2400rpm.

for me that sounds like a good street engine. big intake and exhaust compared to small cam is not that bad thing as vice versa. what do you think?

You can definately make nice power with a small cam! Look at the Ram Jet 350 from GMPP. It uses a 196 deg intake duration cam(@0.050") and makes 350 HP. Not to mention below 2500rpm it makes so much torque it puts the ZZ4 to shame!! This engine was tested in a 3rd gen camaro and it ran around 13.9 sec in the 1/4.

YEAH! ram jet is a single plane intake? here you can have cheese cake and still save the cheese. i think this combo (small cam, huge intake) phenomenon has something to do with fuel injection since FI is more flexible than carb. if you let engine breath with small cam, it makes nice torque but still some serious horse power. ok, you can optimise that high rpm kick with bigger cam, but IMHO, i'd like to have them all: driveability, good MPG and high rev hp.

I don't see how you couldn't get pretty good into the 13's. I mean, with headers, cat back, and ported plenum you should get into the high 13's at around 98-99. I could only imagine heads, intake... possibly some suspension mods, you'd have no problem running low 13's. However, the fact that it would be completly stupid to do that is still there.

KevinP92Z went 13.4 in his 92 Z-28 back when he had the original 350 shortblock, TFS Twisted Wedge heads, Edelbrock base & runners, full SLP exhaust, SLP converter, & SZ50's out back. This combo was good for 270 RWHP around 4500 RPM on MTI's Dynojet. He told me he pulled multiple cars on most fourth gens for the first 1/8 mile then gave it all back by the finish line.

Just pulled out my old timeslips ....

Oh so long ago when I actually had STOCK heads and STOCK camshaft and I was running 13.65@101.3mph on a weak 1.94 short time with a Large Tuber Runner setup. This was with every bolt-on imagineable but still running stock heads, stock cam, stock converter, etc. No weight reduction.

Gunning for NA 11's with bigger cam, bigger stall, and bigger exhaust.

The rest of yhe slip was 1.851 60ft 5.591 330ft 8.738 1/8 and 11.454 1000ft.

man you guys underestimate the L98 dont ya? i was running 14.1 last year with only exhaust (headers to muffler) chip, and airfoil. the engine has stock heads, cam, etc. it was rebuilt and its a 355 but that doesnt really do much with stock everything else. right now im at 13.8 last time i went to the track. only additions to the car since the 14.1's were HAL shocks, MSD blaster coil and MSD 6A box. i also added lakewood traction bars but they broke right after they went on the car so i dont count them anymore (POS's) i would imagine that with tuning and better bolt ons low 13's would be very easy. i know 90Z28SS went into the 13.1s with a basically stock engine and just removed a few 100lbs. of weight, like i think he said 200lbs. anyway, there is a lot of potential in the L98. now with saying that, i have Iron eagles and Lunati cam waiting to go in

i ran 13.62 @ 102 with the stock heads cam intake tranny and gears. That was corrected for altitude. But the more i look at it the more these times seem to be conservative. i keep hearing of cars picking up a second going to other tracks. One guy went 11.8 here a few weeks ago then he went to river city race way in central texas and ran 10.89. so who knows. mid 13's can happen with the stock engine.

90 IROC l98
last season best corected 13.62 @102
mods
full exhaust, AFPR, pulley, jet stage 1 chip, billet servo, 52mm throttle body, slp runners and some 1.6 RR's and a few other little things.
243 RWHP and 342 RWTQ with hot engine and 90 octain fuel
