Problem

ok so here s the deal. most of the time my car starts up right away. sometimes i notice i have to hold the key a little longer. then my rpm needle skips when it s cold out while i havent taken it outta park yet. when the car is warm is surges. my car if i just let go of the brake and dont even touch the gas it climbs on it s own. and shifts to 2nd gear but wont go higher than 25 mph. it actually mantains that speed as well. if the car reaches 220 degrees or over before the fan kicks on the car runs perfect. also i notice that if i put my car in neutral and rev it to about 2000 rpm it feels like the car wants to go like it jerks foward slightly. the car had a distributor changed last year and it ran great for 8 months straight and now it s back. the car had a transmission rebuild and im almost up on the warranty on it. the guy that did it keeps saying it s fine it not the trans. checked for vacuum leaks several times and still nothing. IAC was changed and TPS but what i was told IAC is set right but the TPS cant be set below 800 rpm. is that too high sould i get another one? is there something wrong with the trans? do i need to change the dist. timing was check and it s at 6 degrees now. also i was having a problem driving when it was raining really bad and it seemed to be a relay by the air filter. i have a AFPR and a guage and an air fuel ratio guage setup in car. fuel pressure is set to 42 now is that too low or too high. when it surges i see it on the air fuel guage and on that guage i ve never seen it go rich. it s always lean when it bogs it reaches stoich but when i touch the gas it s lean again. i have AC Delco rapidfires in with a MSD cap and rotor and MSD spark plug wires.

i guess my questions from all my rambling are

1 do i need a new TPS and what is the correct setting for the rpm?
2 is there something wrong with my trans?
3 is my fuel pressure set too low or too high?
4 should i just finish and upgrade the coil and dist to MSD since it s all that s left?
5 could it be that the o2 sensor is not the heated one?
6 is there something else im not seeing?

i ve looked on the search and i ve seen other problems simliar but i ve either checked it already or replaced it already. or it s not that simple as mine.

Re: Problem

I would start by checking the distributor cap. If it is cracked or not on all the way it will get moisture in it and cause similar problems. Also I would suggest bumping the fuel pressure up to atleast 45PSI or more. Just not over 50PSI. Keep me updated on how that works out.

Re: Problem

When you have the fuel pressure gauge hooked up, turn the key to accessory. What does the gauge go up to? Then when you take the key out, what does the gauges say if you leave it for 30 minutes? All this will see if you have a fuel pressure leak. The regulator could have a tear in it.

Re: Problem

ok the dist cap was changed recently to MSD and rotor as well MSD. when i looked at it from underneath before i noticed a lot of cabon under it and i noticed that the rotor wasnt striking the posts evenly. when i changed it. nothing changed. as for fuel pressure isnt the stock pressure at like 42psi. the ontly real upgrade i have is my exhaust for now. i dont see going to 45psi gonna make a difference. i dunno if this helps either but EVERYTIME i come to a stop it s kinda hard to explain but it s like when the rpm s are goin down it clicmbs twice like 300-400 rpm and goes down. almost like a quiet burp lol no noise though. as for checking fuel pressure through t he guage maybe i shoulda stated that the guages are mounted to my pillar. sit s at 42 and when the car is shut off it sits there still i turn it on whatever its at.

Re: Problem

Actually mine is set at 49PSI from the factory. But they very since production technics and tolerances weren't that high back then. Recommended fuel pressure with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator is 45-47PSI. I hope this helps. You could check the ignition module and coil too. I would still pull the cap off and check for any moisture or carbon tracking on the inside the cap.

Re: Problem

well so far i changed the fuel pressure to 47 lbs and i see a difference. it s not running lean as much anymore but still bucking and the trans was looked at again and they said it s still the same. strong as ever. i guess next step is distributor
