Hard to start...

Ok, this has been happening off and on, very spontanious and not consistent. Like last night for example (please bear with me)...I've was driving around a bit, some highway and some city driving and we went to park and chat. Then after about 10-15 minutes, I hop back in my car and go to start it up, and it cranks and it cranks. Dammit! I try it again and same thing, it cranks and cranks and finally starts to catch, sputters a bit and then stalls. It did this two times and then finally started up but was running like crap till it ran for a bit. We drove a short distance, parked again for a chat and the same thing happened.

A couple things I noticed:

- the starter cranks ok and is only a few months old
- the engine when it finally did catch on seemed to be running rich for a short while (strong smell of fuel)
- I can hear the fuel pump running
- it was a little damp last night, I don't think that can affect a TPI motor, but I just thought I would mention it

Any help or hints you guys can give me would be great. I do have Craig Moates software and the ALDL cable to scan the car if anyone knows what I should be looking for. Thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

sounds like your fuel injectors may be breaking down. check the resistance across the poles with an DMM. they should read around 14-16 ohms cold. if they are lower they may be starting to break down. once they heat up, the resistance will lower, and the injectors will stay open longer, causing hard starting, poor fuel economy, and maybe even rough running if they are getting bad enough.

Check you fuel pump ground. Sounds like your fuel pump is going bad to me. Don't know if you have a fuel pump relay. Check if you do.

I will check the resistance on the injectors...do you have any instructions on how to do this? I would be very appreciatative

mtccl: Where is the fuel pump ground? Yes, I have a fuel pump relay and it should be good. It's not that old.

Thanks guys, if anyone else has any suggestions I am all ears

To check the injector resistance, unplug the harness from the injector, touch the DVM (Digital Voltage Meter or something like that) probes to the 2 prongs sticking out from the injector, and measure the resistance in ohms. My SVO injectors were all either 16 or 17 ohms to give you a range to work with.

That's cool, I can manage to check that easy enough. Around 16 ohms eh? How much resistance should that have when they are cold? Is it the same?

The leak down test...can this be done using the valve on the passenger side of the fuel rail and a fuel pressure tester?

I just checked the resistance of the injectors and at cold they were all 16.8 except one was 16.7. I went and drove around the block for about 10 minutes and let the car warm up. Then I checked the resistance again and they all about 17.2-17.3. How much of a range is allowable? And is it bad for the injectors to be higher than 17 ohms?

Does nobody know the acceptable ranges?

That's about the range mine are in. Nothing out of the ordinary with only a .1 ohm difference. One or more injectors could still be leaking through since it sounds like your engine's getting flooded.
