MAF and MAP?
The new Chevy High Performance has an article about swapping a TPI unit onto an older carbed engine. In the article, they state that MAF cars have a MAP sensor too...what is the deal with this?
I have an 88 GTA with the original MAF system on it and, after doing a complete engine swap, never saw a MAP sensor...
WTF? Am I supposed to have a MAP sensor as well as a MAF?
Thanks for any help here...

No, you are not supposed to have a MAP.
They may be mixed up with the newer F-bodies, I think the 4th gens have MAP and MAF...or is it some turbo engines?
Anyways, not yours

I haven't read the article, but if that is indeed what they are saying (TPI cars came with MAF and MAP), then I would say they have their facts mixed up.
TPI cars came with MAF "OR" MAP, not both as Mike said. The later OBDI LT1s (PCM# 8051) had BOTH as Mike said. However, no one has gotten the 8051 PCM to work with an "non-Opti Spark/regular HEI" distributor (yet). Too bad, that would be a nice alternative to the ECMs used by either MAF or MAP.

When I read through the article, I thought it was only a TPI swap. After all, they had more than one picture of a TPI unit and I thought the article was ONLY TPI related.
Hence, my confusion. Of course, it wouldn't be the 1st time they fxxxed up on their facts. Geez, doesn't someone over there own a TPI car? They can't just be either carb or LS1, right?

Umm...OK....I am going to guess that the last post was in response to another thread...
Anyone else on the CHP article?
Thanks.

This isnt the first, nor the last time, CHP has gotten its facts wrong. In fact its the 6th month in a row I've noticed errors. You'd think a Chevy magazine would get their facts about Chevy's correct, but I guess not.
85-89 TPI cars have a MAF only. 90-93 speed density cars have a MAP only. 94+ cars have both a MAF and a MAP. They use the MAF for their primary fuel calculations and the MAP is a backup.

To Matt: I would love to, but between moving into a house out in Rockford and work has been nuts...I have had no time...In fact, my GTA hasn't moved in 3 months
...just in time to move it into storage for the winter. Sigh. I need to come to a meeting, but probably not until after the 1st of the year...I also need to pay my dues...Just add it to the list
Thread Content: Thanks Kevin for clearing that up. Really, I like CHP, but their only real accurate info comes when they do engine buildups and use a carb. Almost like Car Craft, except CC doesn't seem to Fxxx up their EFI facts...as often
