Timing Problems
I have a big problem with my timing I set it to where it runs the best the timing mark is straight up though way past the timing tab (advanced)when I brought it down to factory specs it sounded good and my exhuast leaks became more noticable. Ok I though it should run better seeing that my timing is correct. WRONG runs like Sh*t and backfires a couple times absolutly has NO power. so I turned the timing up (to where it was) and called it a day. I was talking to a "genius" about it and he said a vaucum leak would make it run like crap when timing is set. "It effects the injectors on these fuel injected cars" but him being an old school carb guy i decided to push it back in my mind and ask some others. I have replace my harmonic balancer but i installed it properly with the woodruff key (so there is only one way for it to fit)has anyone had this kind of situation??

If you didn't bypass the EST, then timing will be base timing + chip timing. Chip timing depends on a few things, but it could be in the ballpark of where your mark was. You are looking at an advance from 10-30 degrees added by the computer.
There are no less than 4 factory balancers for small blocks. That is the other possibility. -Matt-

hey chris,
if you didn't bypass your electronic spark timing (est) the brown wire with a white line in it, then it won't be correct.
also a vaccume leak won't affect (effect?) your timing since we have electronic advance distributors not vaccume advance it will just let your car idle higher.
if you want you can give me a call and i can come by and look at it later today (sunday) after church or i can look at it tomorrow (monday) sometime.

I am having the exact same problem. It started when my harmonic balancer seperated and I replaced it with a Fluidampere.
The thing that really toasts my cookies is that when I rebuilt the engine last spring the balancer lined up perfectly with the zero mark when I had the number one piston all the way up. i checked this, re-checked it and had several other people check it out.
Put the engine back together and put it back in the car, started it up and whamo the damn thing still goes to the 12 o'clock position. I can't figure it out but the car runs perfectly???

Whats your timing advance to with the
Est wire connected? I'm curious if your computer is advancing or whatnot.
The symptoms you speak of sounds like retarded timing, or way-to-high-for-your-application gas.
