I have an old GMHTP article on Mr. Smiths IROC. Actually it was still just High Tech Performance then. That car has been ENGINEERED.

Gib,
You've got mail. I also downloaded the longer, better quality video, but only got audio. The file is 3.4 megs so I assume it is all there but the file is corrupt. Anyone good at repairing files? I got these off the website listed above. It mysteriously came up one time and I immediately downloaded the files.
By the way my friend is in the military and was stationed in Japan, met some Austrailian soldiers and asked them what they thought of Foster's Beeeer. They responded by saying, "Its Austrailian for $hit." Do you second that?
------------------
82' Z-28. 327" w/ flat tops. 216/228/112LS. Pocket ported 041 heads 1.94/1.50 SS valves. World Class T-5 from a 91'. Best run? Runs with 2001 vette to 150mph! Soon to be converted over to TPI w/ supercharger.

Yeah, and there are Third Gens out there in the 8's too most likely with all kinds of crazy engine combos. The point is that it is on a modded STOCK TPI intake setup, no MR, no SR. Some don't give the TPI enough credit for what it CAN do. TurboChargers are also rare for these cars.
Its also completely street legal and is a daily driver. To see a GM 305 do that is something because they never really focused on the smaller engines and used them for economy. (With some ridiculously little cams and restrictive heads, never showing their 5.0's potential, they even did it with the 350 5.7's, just less. ) GM always stayed in real musclecar form wanting to make their power with big engines instead, the way a musclecar should, (Torque ) and thats what they concentrated on when they could and always put in top models when it was possible for them too. They still do. I'd like to see some1 do the same as this or better to their Third Gen with an L98.

Everyone remember, for all those saying they're going to get turbos, just remember it's not cheap or simple. Everyone knows turbos are the way to go, but price and complications of trying to make them work on a f-body are what keeps people away. This guy probably has AWHOLE lot of money in the car, and which is why he's known for doing what he's doing right now. 9's out of a stock tpi 305 is far far from easy. Just trying to keep everyone with a realistic stand point.

Is "Smitty" Preston Smith? I remember reading about his car a while back. I emailed him a couple times about his car. I wish he spent time here, I think we could all learn a ton from him. Last I knew he was turning 9s with the supercharger @ 24lbs of boost. I had no idea he switched to a turbo setup.

I finally got to meet him this summer at Englishtown.

He has been helping me some with my turbo setup but he doesnt use the computer very much.
Here are a couple photos of his engine.
Hope he doesnt mind me posting them.
It ran 11.02 @ 124 the day I met him and it looked just like this.

I think it's great that someone is running those kinds of times w/a 305.Some people on here wonder what the big deal is,And the big deal is someone is running 9's in a 305,How many 305's have you seen run 9's?! THAT"s what the big deal is,I'm glad i read this post,Even thou it's old,Better late then never.I was contemplating going to a 350,But now I'm realy motivated to get a 125 horse shot for my 305 and see what it will do. 9-second 305 IROC-Z...
Here is a pic of Mr. Smith's car in street driven mode:
The 9-second T-trim Vortech 305" combo:
Note he fabricated a liquid-intercooler and is still running the stock (Extrude-Honed) TPI induction system.
Here is his current 305" turbo combo:
There used to be a webpage somewhere with his 9-second 305" Vortech write-up, but it appears to be gone now. I recall reading about his build-up in GMHTP magazine a few years ago. Very innovative guy.

Preston Smith's latest Website: http://www.tpi305.com/
Notice in the Tech Specs that it's a 4.025" x 3" Engine.
Sure it's a 305. Just not a small bore version. So much for that flag bearer, eh?

I was wanting to comment about his bore/stroke but Ed beat me to it. Yes, even he was not willing to use the 305. It's a 302 bored .025 over. I'm sure 12 to 26 lbs of boost could make even a Yugo fast let alone an actual 305, but I bet that if he'd used even a bored out 305 block the valve shrouding of the cylinders would have made a noticable difference in power and his ET's. The former comment not meant as a flame towards 305 users.
I would like to one day build an EFI motor with the big bore, short stroke combo. I was very impressed by the motor CHP or Hot Rod built back around 98 that used a 400 block bored 020 over and a 327 crank. It was titled "The 350 Chevy Should Have Built" atlthough they built a carb motor you can definately imagine how well it would have done with a mini ram or ramjet or LTI intake conv. on it. Also if you were to use a rear main adapter and the 3" crank from an L99 motor you'd have a 311" motor. I'd say that's what the 315" motors that have been used in IROC and the Trans Am series are derived from. I would like to see more people begin experimenting with these types of combos for EFI NA, N20, and forced induction applications and what results they had. Any Takers?
