Re: Annoying Idle problems

I have the EXACT same prob with my 85.. had a shop try to figure it out (charging me 1200) and said they couldn't figure it out... pisses me off... But same thing.. when you are on the gas.. no prob.. if you hold the gas just a tad at a stop while holding the brakes.. its fine.. but like you said.. coasting.. or sitting longer than like 30 secs.. and it surges BADLY.. tries to shoot forward.. then eventually dies...

Having a very similar problem with my BRAND NEW (25 miles) 355 TPI. I'd love to have some input on this as well.

Re: Annoying Idle problems

I've been told the throttle cable could be an issue.. if its sticking... I haven't gotten in there to check it out...

Re: Annoying Idle problems

i've heard a few different things, one being it could be the i air control it could just plainly be dirty, two it could be the timing, three it could be the throttle position sensor. i know there are many more theories and or soloutions and i would die to hear them.

Re: Annoying Idle problems

Ill join the club with idling and surging problems with my modded 355 tpi setup. But I figured out many things about fixing these issues and I will say check everything..dont assume things are right just because you put on new part.If you installed a new tps or iac..double tripple check that they are set correctly and then relearn the computer.Check fuel pressure, timing, esc module,02 sensor, coolant temp sensor, mat sensor,Vacuum leaks etc.I made a list based of searching the boards of other peoples experiences and learned so much about what to look for and then I attacked my car with a plan and bit by bit it went away.I couldnt tell you exactly which part may have caused it..Id say its just a mixture of everything not being happily in sync and throws it off.And guys..dont get too frustrated..i lost my cool at first and wanted to just burn the damn thing up lol..keep a very open mind that the smallest thing can be the biggest problem and you might just laugh at what is causing your poor idling and drivability.

Re: Annoying Idle problems

move the mafs connector around

those terminals inside tend to get a little spread out

Re: Annoying Idle problems

Yes that module can cause bad idle at times.I did a code every now and then for esc. When i did get around to checking it,I had found it was old and had poor contact patch.Got a new one and that solved that problem.

Re: Annoying Idle problems

how much did it cost you to replace that module?

i think the idling thread for tune ports should be a stick in all reality.

Re: Annoying Idle problems

My surging problem was a bad EGR valve , it cleared right up when I replaced it .

Re: Annoying Idle problems

The esc module on the dist was cheap..about $20 if memory serves me correctly.I dont have any emissions/smog on my car so it forced me to cover the basics of what would cause my problems.

Does anybody know what all goes into removing your smog pump so i can get rid of my egr valve. cause well i have no egr tube at all. it pretty much cuts off at the egr valve.

My 88 Trans am did the same thing. At first I thought it was the Fuel pump, but it really was that the distributor was very dirty. So, I took it out cleaned everything and placed it back, so far it works great!
